Willkie Condemns Anti-Semitism

NEW YORK—At a public rally in Carnegie Hall last Saturday
night, held under the theme "Keep Anti-Semitism Out of New
York," the recent outrages were- condemned by Dr. Henry Smith
Leiper of the Federal Council of Churches, and in messages from
Wendell L. Willkie, Bishop William T. Manning, Reb. William J
Mahoney of St. Johns College, Rev. Harry Emerson Fosdick and
John Roy Carlson.
This rally was held under the auspices of the Council Against
Intolerance in America.
In his message, Mr. Willkie stated:
"The mounting wave of anti-Semitism at home shocks me. As
a barometer of moral integrity, the recent acts of violence form a
tragic indictment of the passive indifference of too large a segment
of our population.
"Anti-Semitism is not a germ which can be isolated or con-
fined to any one group in our society. The total destruction which
it works can be prevented only when a sufficient immunity against
it exists throughout the community. This immunity can be cre-
ated through continuous education and constant use of democratic
practices."

be far more faulty. By under-
standing the acts and motivations
of earlier ages we become better
able to evaluate and guide our
present destiny.
We need not ask that Jews
study the Bible only that they
may thereby become better and
more religious Jews. What they
learn from it will help them in
everything they study or think.

Haile Selassie
Has Many Jews
In Official Posts

Jacob Savin's Book, "The Only
Hope," Strong Plea for Zionism

CAIRO, (JTA) — Emperor
Haile Selassie of Eethiopia has
placed a large number of na-
tive Jews—Falashas—in import-
ant administrative posts as part
of a large scale program to re-
build the internal administration .
of the country destroyed during
the Italian occupation, it is
learned here.
The Emperor is also utilizing
the services of several Palestine
Jews, who are now in the coun-
try operating and directing new
industrial plants.
Some of the persons who are
now in government posts are
Prof. Kamrat, a Falasha, who is
in the Department of Education;
Jacob Tesedco, also a Falasha, on
the staff of the Ministry of Fin-
ance; Dr. Alexander Katz, for-
mer German- industrialist, in
charge of the tax department of
the Finance Ministry.
Prof. Norman Bentwich, for-
mer attorney-general of Pales-
tine, was recently in Addis Aba-
ba as an adviser to the Emperor
on international affairs, while an
American Jewish attorney, Na-
than Marein, who represented
Haile Selassie in Jerusalem when
the Italians sued unsuccessfully
for possession of the Emperor's
property in Palestine, is now a
judge of the Ethiopian High
Court. Prof. Bentwich organized
a branch of the Friends of the
Hebrew University during h i s
stay in Addis Ababa.

Anti-Semitism Must
Go, Masaryk Says

CINCINNATI, 0. — Czechoslo-
vakia, a nation that looked with
grave disfavor on anti-Semitism
in days of peace, will be in the
front ranks of nations seeking to
outlaw that evil after the war,
Jan Masaryk indicates in an ar-
ticle in the January issue of the
magazine Liberal Judaism.
"It will be the common respon-
sibility of all nations that can
exert influence to deal with the
Jewish question—in the sight of
God, history and posterity — as
honestly and justly as if their
very lives depended upon it," the
foreign minister of the Czecho-
slovak Government-in-Exile told
Louis Rittenberg, editor of Lib-
eral Judaism, publication of the
Union of American Hebrew Con-
gregations.

Drew Denies Guilt

In a radio broadcast from the
City Hall last Sunday, Patrol-
man James LeRoy Drew, recent-
ly acquitted of anti-Semitic
charges, reaffirmed his innocence,
expressed his regrets that his
case disturbed the public and de-
clared that his 17 years in serv-
ice showed that he entertained
no 'evil antagonism" toward
Jews.
Mayor LaGuardia, speaking on
this program, interviewed three
policemen — a Catholic, a Jew
and a Protestant—all of whom
expressed their belief that no
racial or religious intolerance
existed in the police department

for wide support of efforts for
the upbuilding of the Jewish Na-
tional Home.
In the preface, Mr. Savin ex-
plains that he was motivated to
write the book because he felt
the need for a simple statement
of facts and for answers to ques-
tions propounded regarding Zion-
ism by the average Jew.
Of unusual interest in this book
is the lengthy introduction writ-
ten by the Rev. Donald G. Loth-
rop of the Community Church. of
Boston, who presents the Chris-
tian viewpoint in favor of Zion-
ism. He commends Mr. Savin's
book as "a call to action," and
declares:
Threshold of Victory
"The time of standing on the
fence is over. In the dark days
when England was on the brink
of Hell it was possible to call for
moderation. That day is over.
Mankind is on the threshold of
victory. That victory would not
be complete without the thor-
ough fulfillment of the Balfour
Declaration. Now is the time to
fight for that fulfillment."
"The Only Answer" is illustra-
ted with photographs of leaders
in the Zionist movement and with
pictures of farms and industries
in Palestine.
The book reviews such ques-
tions as the conflicts of nation-
ality and religion in the discus-
sion of Zionism, and maintains
that Jews have not lost their na-
tional identity.

Active in Zionism
Mr. Savin has been active in the
Zionist Organization of Detroit
for the past five years, and his
experiences with prospects for
membership have caused him to
start work on this book. He is
the head of the Michigan Box
Manufacturing Co. Before com-
ing to this country 20 years ago,
he was a student in the Slobotka
Yeshivah. Mr. and Mrs. Savin re-
side at 3726 Fullerton Ave. They
have one daughter, Sylvia, a stu-
dent at the University of Michi-
gan, and one son, Joseph, who
was Bar Mitzvah several weeks
ago.

The book, "The Only Answer",
is available from Mr. Savin and
will be on sale in local book
stores.
