The N. Y. Anti-Semitic Outbursts
Commissioner of Investigation William B. Herlands' re-
port on his investigation of vandalism, anti-Semitism and the
desecration of synagogues and cemeteries in New York
proves the point that had been made by Jews since the ad-
vent of Hitlerism in Germany, namely, in the words of Mr.
Herlands' report: _
"Vandalism and violence are not the root of the
problem; they are only symptoms. They are a sign of
undemocratic, un-American thinking. The vandals and
offenders have been inspired by the same kind of anti-
American and anti-Semitic propaganda used by the
Nazis as part of their . technique of 'divide and conquer'.
Such propaganda originated in Germany and was adopt-
ed by such domestic organizations as the Christian Front
and the Christian Mobilizers, among others.
"One of the objectives of such propaganda was to
plant the seeds of racial and religious hate. The commis-
sion of certain acts of vandalism and violence cited in
this report is attributable to propaganda sponsored by
the Christian Front and the Christian Mobilizers. Wheth-
er this constitutes 'instigation' or 'inspiration' is at best
a matter of definition. We believe that inspiration is but
one form of instigation."
It is most unfortunate that leaders in communities like
New York and Boston hitherto had either refused to pay
heed to similar warnings from Jews and non-Jews alike who
warned that the condoning of anti-Semitic propaganda is
certain to result in violence; or they failed to understand the
similarity of situations in this country and Germany whose
crackpot elements are ready to respond to appeals to passion
and hatred.
Another most regrettable conclusion one must reach
upon reading the Herlands report is that a major share of
responsibility for the outbursts is attributable to the negli-
gence of the police departments in the various communities
where the outbursts have occurred.

The 'Fronts' that Create 'Discord'
Criticism leveled at the "Emergency Committee to Save
the Jewish People of Europe" and its "series of fronts" by the
Interim Committee of the American Jewish Conference and
the condemnation of the "League for a Free Palestine" by the
American Zionist Emergency Council have not prevented the
creators of the "series of fronts" from attempts to expand its
activities by conjuring up "the illusion of activities by press
agentry."
The so-called "Emergency Committee" has just an-
nounced a new front—the formation of a National Jewish
Council, "organized by hundreds of leading rabbis, writers,
radio commentators and community leaders," which "seeks
only to save European Jewry from the Nazi death chambers."
The impression that must be acquired by the prominent
non-Jews who have fallen into the error of joining the
"Emergency Committee" and its subsidiary "fronts" is that
there is no other group in existence that cares about saving
the Jews.
There is not a word about the Joint Distribution Com-
mittee, or the United Palestine Appeal, or the Jewish Agency
for Palestine, or the American Jewish Conference. These—
the recognized bodies formed to provide actual help for those
who can be saved, and to battle for justice for the Jews,
wherever they may be—are non-existent insofar as the ir-
responsible fronts are concerned.
It is true that a number of rabbis, under the leadership
of the head of the Agudath Israel in this country, have be-
come partners in this irresponsible effort. That ought not to
mislead right-thinking men and women who should resort to
the pressure of public opinion in condemning attempts to
undermine Jewish unity by the formation of "fronts" based
on press agentry.
Responsible public opinion should rule all such activi-
ties out of court, and everything possible should be done to
discredit the formation of the new group that has been
named National Jewish Council.
of Sheba endeavor to test out
the wisdom of Solomon.
On one occasion she brought
before him several servants,
both men and women, but all
costumed so that it . was most
difficult to distinguish between
them.
"Now, 0 wise king, tell me
which of these are of your sex
and which are of mine?" she
asked.
Solomon ordered an attendant
to bring nuts and parched corn
and distributed them to the
Queen's servants.
The men, unashamed, opened
their capes and placed the pre-
sents in the pockets of their gar-
ments, while the women, who
were more modest, spread out .
their handkerchiefs and wrapped
the gifts therein, thus by their
modesty disclosing their true sex
to Solomon.
Well, indeed, did Solomon
know the characteristics of the
opposite sex. As did that Tal-
mudist who, when, on referring:
to that passage in Genesis, "And
from the rib, which God had'
taken from the man, made He a:
woman," he said:
"Woman was not formed out
of a man's head, so she might:
not be too proud; nor out of his
eye or ear, so she be not curious:
to see and hear everything; nor
out of his mouth, so she might.
not be jealous; nor out of his
hand or foot, so she might not
touch everything nor go every-
where but he formed her out
of his rib, which is hidden from
sight, so she might exemplify
the qualities of modesty, virtue
and purity."
