A few years ago Lily Gerard was forced to salute the swastika,
but she's marching under Old Glory now. First-hand experience
with the Nazi brand of culture has given Miss Gerard particular
reason to appreciate America. She got her start here through
the National Refugee Service, whose work is financed by the
United Jewish Appeal. The NRS helped her to resettle in San
Francisco where she soon learned American ways and became
an American citizen. Many roads of employment were open to
her, but she preferred to join the WAC in response to America's
call for woman volunteers.
