Jewish Center Activities

Open Saturday Nite Club
For Teen-Age Members
Ten-age members of the Jew-
ish Community Center will have
the grand opening of their Sat-
urday Nite Club this Saturday
evening. Dining, dancing, s o f t
drinking and a floor show will
be featured attractions. Iry Field
and his orchestra will supply the
music for dancing, which will
continue until 1 a. m. Center
girls will serve as waitresses.
The Saturday Nite Club, which
will be a bi-weekly event here-
after, is sponsored by the Inter-
mediate Council of the Center.
Clubs will alternate as hoSts at
succeeding affairs. The Brandeis
Club will assume this function
at the grand opening. Admission
is 25 cents per person.

Offer Leadership Course
Meeting for the third time,
volunteers attending the leader-
ship training course of the Jew-
ish Community Center will have
a round table discussion on the
"Why and how of leadership."
The next meeting is scheduled
for Tuesday, at 8:30 p. m., at the
Center.

Fourth Holiday Hop Jan. 16
With LeRoy Smith and his
- Victor Recording artists provid-
ing the music, the fourth Holi-
day Hop, a United Nations
Dance, will be held at the Cen-
ter Sunday, Jan. 16. Tickets may
be obtained from Holiday Hop
Committee members or at the
Center office.

Prizes Given to Winners
In the Hanukah Festival
Over 200 children attended
the Hanukah festival at the Jew-
ish Center. Judges selected the
following prize-winners in the
arts and crafts division: Harvey

Council Concert

The third cultural affair in the
series of seven being sponsored
by the Jewish Community Center
and Jewish Community Council
will be a concert of Jewish song
and dance on Sunday evening,
Jan. 23, in the auditorium of the
Jewish Community Center, Wood-
ward and Holbrook.
Miss Sarah Gorby, the famous
contralto, will present a program
of Jewish folk songs, and Ben-
jamin Zemach, interpreter of the
Jewish dance who has gained a
world-wide reputation, will pre-
sent his unique performance of
the traditional Biblical and folk
dances. Both artists appear sep-
arately and together in a combin-
ation of song and dance.
The series of seven cultural
affairs is being arranged by the
Jewish Community Center and
Jewish Community Council for
the purpose of giving the Jew-
ish public here the chance to
enjoy rich cultural programs for
only 25 cents. Jewish organiza-
tions can purchase blocks of 50
tickets and more for 15 cents.
Jewish organizations are urged to
reserve the evening of Jan. 23.
Reservations for tickets can be
made in the office of the Jewish
Community Council by calling

Cover" Next Wednesday
"Under- Cover" by John Roy
Carlson will be reviewed at the
next Book . Chat program at the
Jewish Center Wednesday. - Isaac
Franck, executive director of the
Jewish Community Council, will
be the reviewer. and discussion
leader. Book Chats are arranged
in conjunction with the Utley
Branch of the Detroit Public Li-.

"Man of Aran" Film at
Jewish Center This Sunday
"Man of Aran," a full-length
film feature, will be shown at
the Jewish Center this Sunday at
-17 p. m. This movie will be aug-
mented by appropriate short sub-
jects. This is the second in a se-
ries of film programs sponsored
jointly by the Center Cinema
Guild and Migdal Labor Zion-
ists.
"A Chaplin Festival" is sched-
uled for Feb. 6, and "The Gol-
em" will conclude the series on
March 5. Tickets may be obtain-
ed at the Center office.

Mothers' Clubs
The general theme chosen for
discussion by the Mothers' . Clubs
this week is "Our Interdepend-
ent World." Among the ques-
tions to be asked are: "What
patterns will be followed by In-
dia, China, North Africa and
Palestine?" "What Contribution
in this direction can be expected
of the American Jewish Confer-
ence?"

The Men's Club of Temple
Israel announces a musical pro-
gram, to be giv-
en in the Lec-
ture Hall of the
Detroit Institute
of Arts, on Tues-
day, Jan. 18, at
8 p. m.
The following
Detroit artists
will participate:

man, tenor; Karl
Haas, pianist; Robert Tulman.
Henry Siegl, violinist, and Dan
Frohman, cellist.
A solo group will be given by
each of the participants. The
program includes works by Han-
del, Schumann, Gershwin, Cho-
pin, Kreisler, Bloch, Massenet
and others.
The Siegl Quartet, with Mr.
Haas at the piano, will perform
a work entitled "Variations on
The Big Bad Wolf," composed
by members of The Bohemians,
Musicians' Club of Detroit. The
program has been arranged by
Mr. Haas.
The public is invited. Admis-
sion will be by card.

Feature Premiere of
"Short Symphony" Sunday

Leopold Stokowski and the
NBS Symphony Orchestra will
present the first American per-
formance of "A Short Symphony"
by Aaron Copland on the General
Motors Symphony of the Air pro-
gram Sunday, Jan. 9 (NBC, 5 to

A new patriotic cantata "The
Great Assembly Line" by Sin-
ger and Zaret, which depicts the
United States as a huge indus-
trial unit working to win the
war, will have as soloist a bass-
baritone who has not previously
been heard in Detroit—Wallace
Schonschack of Mt. Clemens.

Goldberg to Sing
In Center's 4th

Concert, Jan. 18

The music department of the
Jewish Community Center will
present a program of Russian
music at the fourth in a series of
concerts, in the Center's Audi-
torium Tuesday evening, Jan. 18.
Henri Goldberg, distinguished
baritone who was acclaimed in
an all-Russian recital a few
weeks ago, will be heard in Rus-
sian songs.
Max Weiner, violinist and new
member of the Detroit Syrn 7
phony Orchestra, will appear in
this program. He is a. pupil of
Ilya Schkolnik, concertmaster of
the Detroit Symphony Orchestra,
and played with the Pittsburgh
Symphony Orchestra last season.
The third soloist will be Eve-
lyn. Gurvitch, Detroit pianist and
teacher.
Rose Bassin-Stein will be ac-
companist.

Choose Woman Councillor

In Rosh Pina, Palestine

ROSH PINA (Palcor) — The
country's first woman councillor
has been elected to the Local
Council of this Jewish village,
which dates back for over 50
years, in Northern Galilee near
Salad. She ran on the W.I.Z.O.
ticket and received 112 votes. She
is Mrs S. Goldstein, a local house-
wife and member of one of the
veteran families of the settle-
ment.
