Rabbinical Assembly Drafts
Chaplains For Armed Forces

Members Put on Call and Are 'Drafted' by Lottery
System; Out of 185 Now In Service, 55 Are
Drawn From Conservative Ranks

NEW YORK—(Religious News
Service)—More than a third of
Jewish Chaplains in the Army
and Navy have been "drafted" by
the Rabbinical Assembly of
America, organization of Con-
servative Rabbis, whose members
have placed themselves "on call"
for chaplaincy service, regard-
less of family or other considera-
tions.
"Ours is the only religious
group in the country to have
adopted such a plan," Rabbi
Louis M. Levitsky, president of
the Rabbinical Assembly, told
Religious News Service here.
"Out of the 185 Jewish chaplains
now in the armed forces, 55 are
Cons e_r v a tive Rabbis, whose
names were drawn under a lot-
tery system similar to that used
by the national selective service
boards."

137 Called So Far

Of the total_ of 162 Conserva-
tive Rabbis under 45 who are
eligible for the organization's
manpower pool, Rabbi Levitsky
said, 137 have been called to
date, but the majority have not
been able to pass the Army's
physical test.
The "lottery" plan, according
to the Conservative Jewish lead-
er, has been in force since Febru-
ary, 1942, when an extraordinary
convention, attended by about 80

2 Tel Aviv Jews
Convicted for
Wearing Badges

Co u r t Recognized Jewish
Agency Efforts to Recruit
Soldiers; Cites Violation

A short time ago, two Jews of
Tel-Aviv were convicted by the
Chief Magistrate, M.F.F. Rogers,
and placed under bond for two
years for wearing Jewish Agency
recruiting badges • without the
permission of the District Com-
missioner. -
In pronouncing sentence, the
Chief Magistrate acknowledged
the genuine desire of Jewish in-
stitutions to further recruiting for
the war effort. In the test case
against Elhanan. Brenner, 41, he
declared: "I haven't the slightest
doubt that he and many others
have been and are doing impor-
tant work for the war effort. But
as the legislature has made it an
offense to wear the badge, he
must not do so in the future with-
out permission."
Since the Palestine govern-
ment cannot legally enact con-
scription in a mandated territory,
the Jewish Agency has been re-
cruiting on a voluntary basis with
the co-operation, of civilian and
military authorities. Over 25,000
Jewish recruits have been mobil-
ized to the army, 80 per cent
from the ranks of the Histadrut.
The Yishuv voluntarily has
provided $1,600,000 for the relief
of soldiers' families, for the Jew-
ish recruits receive less than their
English brethren-in-arms.

per cent of the organization's 328
members, was summoned to con-
sider the most democratic meth-
od of providing chaplains. It was
agreed at the meeting that every
member of the Rabbinical As-
sembly must give up his right of
exemption or deferment under
the Selective Service law, to
which he was entitled as a
clergyman.

.
450 Rabbis Eligible
Out of approximately 1,100

Rabbis of the Orthodox, Conser-
vative, and Reform faiths, who
form the bulk of the English-
speaking rabbinate of America,
only some 600, according to
Rabbi Levitsky, are below the
age of 45, and of these roughly a
third could not pass the pre-
scribed physical tests. This leaves
about 450 Rabbis actually eligible
for chaplaincy service.
All Jewish applicants for chap-
laincy duty, Rabbi Levitsky
pointed out, are examined by
the Army and Navy Committee
of the Jewish Welfare Board,
which consists of 21 Rabbis, rep-
resenting Orthodox, Conserva-
tive, and Reform congregations.
Assurance is required that each
accepted candidate will serve,
when necessary, the spiritual
needs of Jewish soldiers of other
than the chaplain's own denomi-
nation.

The Education Information
Committee of the United Hebrew
Schools, headed by Rabbi Morris
Adler, issued a Hanukah bulletin
containing excerpts from ad-
dresses delivered during the radio
broadcast marking the formal
closing of Education Month.
aharles Rubiner, master of
ceremones, said in his opening
remarks that if American Jewry
is to rise to its proper stature as
a community, it will have to re-
store Jewish education to its
rightful place of distinction and
respect.

Rudolph Zuieback, president of
the United Hebrew Schools, spoke
about the Regional Education
Conference which was recently
held in Columbus.
"It gave' me very much satis-
faction," said Mr. Zuieback, "to
find that our own United Hebrew
Schools was recognized as one of
the leading systems of schools in
the country."
_Bernard Isaacs gave a brief
outline of the courses of study
offered _ by the United Hebrew
schools. He said:
"Simultaneously with the study
of Ivri we teach the elements of
the Hebrew language, preparing
the child for the study of Chu-
mosh and later for the earlier
prophets. The study of history,
too, occupies an important place -
in the curriculum.
"This course of study is fol-
lowed by a four-year course in
e high school where we teach
the major prophets, Hebrew lit-
erature, grammar and composi-
tion, Mishna, and Gemara, his-
tory, Jewish ethics and cere-
monials."
M-rs. Joseph H. Ehrlich said:
"Let our children drink deep at
the fountains of Jewish learning,
that they may be proud of their
heritage, and so live by the pat-
tern, the blue print, made by
their own priests and prophets.
Anti-Semitism cannot destroy us,
no one can destroy us but our-
selves, our indifference, our ig-
norance. Let our children have •
an understanding of and pride in
their heritage. This will give
them a positive approach to Jew-
ish life, and become for them a
source of personal and social sal-
vation."
Rabbi Adler spoke about the
survival of the Jewish people. He
said that the Jewish people have
survived because through the
ages he has been successful in
keeping three lines of communi-
cation open and intact: with the
past, with K'lal Yisroel and faith
in the future.

Director Eddie Buzzell suffered

Tour. So severe was the damage
that he was required to wear an
iron brace.

Jewish children should attend a Jewish school from the

Jewish children who receive a Jewish education
are not only better Jews, but . . .
They are in general more intelligent, more
learned, and more culturd than their Jewish
friends who have not been given a Jewish
education, and . . .
They are better prepared for life in a complex
