In Plane Mishap

NEW YORK, (JTA) — The
Jewish Welfare Board this week
reported that Naval .Lt. Ralph
Pleatman of Cincinnati has re-
ceived five letters of commenda-
tion from high Navy Department
officials, and is the recipient of
the Navy and Marine Corps
Medal for "outstanding service in
a submarine on war patrol." Lt.
Pleatman was in command of a
submarine which sent a destroyer
and eight other enemy ships to
the bottom—an estimated 40,000
tons of Japanese shipping.
Earlier, he had been serving
aboard a sub on an extended Pa-
cific cruise. One morning he de-
tected a heavy smoke smudge on
the horizon; he notified his .supe-
riors, who pointed the sub in that
direction, to find a big troop
transport heavily loaded with
men and supplies and escorted
by a destroyer. Deep in enemy
waters, the sub launched its tor-
pedoes. They were seen to strike
home with shattering effect.

Lt. (jg) Murray M. Waxman,
(USNR) 28, of 225 Merton Rd.,
lost his life in an air crash in a
routine flight over Minneapolis,
Minn., on Dec. 17.
Lt. Waxman was an alumnus
of M.I.T. and Yale University.
He had been employed as an
Engineer at Vickers, Inc., before
entering the Navy, was a mem-
ber of the Detroit Junior Cham-
ber of Commerce and active in
various phases of Jewish -com-
munity life.
As a member of the original
board of directors of the Detroit
Junior Service Group, he played
a leading role in the Junior Di-
vision drives of the Allied Jew-
ish Campaign, was a member of
the steering committee and an
officer of the board.
He was active for a number of
years as a club leader at the Christian Front Leader
Jewish Community Center.
