The New Yeai- 1944

The year 1944, whose destiny, we believe and hope, is to
record a victorious peace for the democracies of the world,
is being ushered in most appropriately with prayers for the
triumph of decency in the world.
President Roosevelt has proclaimed a National Day of
Prayer for Jan. 1, and the sentiments of the Jewish people,
comingled with the prayers of our Christian neighbors, are
expressed adequately in the prayer for the New Year 1944
prepared by the Synagogue Council of America.
All Israel joins in reciting this prayer:

0 righteous Judge uphold the might of the United
Nations in their struggle against the forces of evil and
oppression. Bestow Thy blessing upon their leaders. Let Thy
spirit guide them and Thy power sustain them that they may
lead us victoriously out of strife into peace, freedom, and
justice for all mankind.
Send Thy healing to this stricken world. Let Thy light
break through the shadows of hatred and strife to gladden our
eyes with the approaching vision of victory and peace.
Almighty God destroy the forces of malice, greed and bigotry.
Guide mankind in the paths of righteousness.
May this new year bring deliverance to all who are
oppressed and persecuted, and healing and succor to the
broken body of Israel. In the world's redemption from evil,
may Israel find restoration from its sorrows, May the.King-
dom of truth, justice, love and peace be established on earth
in our day. Amen.

Another Palestine Verdict

Palestine's administration continues its policy of dealing
unjustly with the peaceful Jewish settlers who are deter-
mined to defend their position as liberty-loving men and
women.
Because they had hidden ammunition which was to be
used for self-defense, seven colonists in the communal settle-
ment of Hulda were given jail sentences ranging from two
to six years.
Thus, representatives of the great land which gave the
world the Magna Charta are now responsible for the annull-
ment of the most sacred principle involved in any declaration
of justice: the right to defend one's life and "property.
* * *
In the long run, it will not be the Jewish people that
will be looked upon as the indicted party in the latest
Palestine issue, but the British authorities. Most devastating
evidence against the British is the following interesting fact:
When the verdict of the court was announced against
two of the defendants—Jacob Gallata and Moshe Hass—who
had pleaded guilty, lighter sentences were promised the
others if they would divulge the source from which they had
obtained the arms. Their attorney made the following state-
ment to the court:

"I am instructed by my clients to inform the court that
because the conversation between you and me was in English,
and was not translated into Hebrew, they were not aware at the
time the verdict was imposed that Your Honor had suggested
to them that they divulge the source from which they had
obtained the ammunition for the future defense . of their colony.
They ask me to say that had they known then what the Court
was proposing, they would immediately have replied as they
do now, namely, that as self-respecting men they wouldn't be-
tray conscience for freedom. They declare that they are not
criminals who are protecting other criminals, but that they are
persons who believe that what they had done was necessary for
the defense of their settlement."

• Freedom-loving people undoubtedly will rule that this
declaration is more in the spirit of the Magna Charta than
a court's verdict which punished men and women for refusing
to remain unprotected.
Men who "wouldn't betray conscience for freedom" must
be classed among the world's greatest libertarians.
British authorities in Palestine were twice responsible
for murders and property destruction in Hulda by their
failure to protect the colony's settlers. Hulda's brave pioneers
refuse to risk a third destruction, and Jewish public opinion
throughout the world must uphold them in their efforts to
protect themselves.

The Rescue Resolutions

The Foreign Affairs Committee of the United States
Senate has unanimously approved the resolution calling for
the formation of a commission to study means of providing
rescue for the millions of Jews who are caught in the Nazi
trap in. Europe.
This action was taken in spite of the hesitation of the
House Foreign Affairs Committee which considered a similar
resolution. It is to be hoped that favorable action on the
pending resolution will be, taken by the House committee
when Congress reconvenes.
The Christian Science Monitor, one of our most liberal
newspapers, recently had this to say on the question of the
proposed resolutions to find asylums for persecuted Jews:

Sponsors of the resolution recommend that the commission
work out with neutral countries bordering occupied Europe a
system of temporary reservation camps to which Jewish refugees
might escape or be sent, to be cared for until permanent
settlement could be arranged elsewhere. Such camps would be
financed largely through private sources.
It is doubtful what effect this would have on the Jews in
Germany whose rescue depends almost solely on the force of
United Nations' arms. But in the light of the Nazis worsening
position, it is felt that political pressure can be brought to bear
on the satellite nations, where more than a million Jews are
in danger of extermination, or outright massacre. Legislative
action strengthening the official threat of Allied reprisal might
also serve to deter Nazis in occupied countries from committing
further atrocities.
Unless, however, the resolution receives prompt Congres-
sional approval, and the commission is appointed and moves
forward with the utmost dispatch, the effort will amount to
little. For the Allied advance has markedly accelerated the
Nazi determination to clear all Jews out of Europe before the
war's end.

The Monitor is right. Prompt action is necessary. The
Congressional approval of an allocation of funds for relief
of the Jewish impoverished masses, coupled with a declara-
tion that our government is determined to find havens of
refuge for these persecuted, will go a long way in warning
Europe's culprits against repetition of the brutalities which
have characterized their hatred for everything humane.

Punishment of the Glutton
There was a custom in. Sodom
that he who invited a guest to a
wedding banquet without the
consent of the host would be re-
quired to forfeit his coat to him..
One day a beggar came to a
beautiful home where a wedding
banquet was being served and
asked for food. He was refused
but, undaunted, he walked in
through a side door, sat down at
a table and began to partake of
the sumptuous meal.
A guest who sat next to him,
on his right hand, noticing his
unkempt appearance, asked him
who had invited him.
"You did," replied the beggar.
Knowing the custom prevail-
ing in that land and fearing that
he would lose his coat, he arose
hastily and went from the house.
Before long the guest on his
left asked him the same question
and he again replied: "You did."
Fearing that he might lose his
coat, this guest likewise left the
table. Practicing the same decep-
tion on each one at his table, he
finally had to himself the whole
table and all the food that was
upon it.
Like the glutton that he was,
he ate everything on the table
and later paid the penalty for his
gluttonous appetite by becoming
very ill.
Says the Talmud further on the
subject:
"A man who is a glutton or a
drunkard will suffer as a result."
"Gluttonous eating is poisonous
to the body of man and causes
many diseases."

What Judaism Teaches regarding
the Unity and Equality of the
Human Race.
Judaism teaches that all of us
have one Father, one God who
has created us all. It forbids dis-
crimination or distinction because
of race, color, or creed. It teaches
that all men are endowed with
equal rights; that whatever dif-
ference may appear on the sur-
face between races and people,
between rich and poor, between
talented and ordinary people, all
are classed as human beings,
created in the image of God.

The Sadducees
Sadducees, a religious sect in
Judaism, originated about the
same period' as the Pharisees.
They were the aristocratic, priest-
ly party, who rejected the tradi-
tion of the Pharisees. Religion
was by them construed as a code
of morals with certain distinctive
practices; hence their insistence
on the freedom of the will. When
the Temple fell, they disappeared
with it, having no other support
than the Mosaic ritual.

At Kfar Masar, on the heights which link the Valley of
Jezreel with Lower Galilee in Palestine, the 40th agricultural
settlement since the outbreak of the war was established last
week.
Located in the neighborhood of Kfar Tabor, east of Givat
Hamore, the Borochov Group of Settlers, belonging to the
Moshav movement of Smallholders' Cooperative, will make
their home on 5,000 dunams of land provided by the Jewish
National. Fund. In the past seven years, these settlers had
worked in various settlements in Emek Jezreel, and they are .
