Page Eight THE JEWISH NEWS Shaarey Zedek to Observe 80th Anniversary Sunday Event to Be Marked by Hanukah Dinner; Program Listed by President Morris H. Blumberg; History of Congregation Traced to 1862 the lighting of the Hanukah candles, by Cantor J. H. Sonen- klar. An address will be delivered by Judge William Friedman of the Wayne County Circuit Court who will outline the history of Shaarey Zedek. Although deferred for a year, the 80th anniversary celebration is being looked forward to with great interest by the large Shaarey Zedek family. Congregation Shaarey Zedek was organized in 1862 as an off- shoot of Temple Beth El, which was formed in 1850. Its incor- poration took place Dec. 6, 1862, when a group of Temple Beth El •members insisted upon adher- ence to the Orthodox ritual and formed a congregation of their own. First Location The first Shaarey Zedek struc- ture was located on Congress and St. Antoine Sts. The frame 'struc- ture had a religious school and both began to prosper. A brick structure was erected in 1877, and through the efforts of the late David W. Simons another synagogue then in existence malgamated with Shaarey Zedek. In 1903, the synagogue moved to Winder near St. Antoine where a synagogue was erected on a site donated by the late Samuel N. Ginsburg. Dr. A. M. Hershman, one of the most scholarly graduates of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, accepted the syna- gogue's call to become its Rabbi in 1907. Rabbi Morris Adler came here in 1938. Impressive Structure The impressive structure on Willis and Brush Sts. was built in 1913. The change in neighborhoods necessitated-the holding of sup- plementary services in the 12th St. section and led to the plan- ning for the present synagogue site on Chicago Blvd. and Lawton Ave. On May 25, 1930, the corner- stone of the present building was laid and services were held in the beautiful new synagogue on the Holy Days of 1931. Mrs. Welt Gives Council View on Palestine Issue Mrs. Joseph M. Welt of De- . troit, president of the National Council of Jewish Women,• at a press conference in New York List week outlined the o•ganiza- tion's policy with regard to Pal- estine. Mrs. Welt stated: "In the name of Jewish unity, the National Council of Jewish Women, which comprises women of all shades of opinion, has ac- cepted a positive attitude to- wards Palestine. The changing world picture has forced us to di- vert our exclusive attention from the American scene as we have done in the course of 50 years of existence. It is still our aim to train women for a living de- mocracy but we are faced with an increasing persecution of the Jews in Europe \vhich makes it necessary to take a firm stand concerning this problem." Aufbau, (Reconstruction), the German-English-refugee periodi- cal, commenting on Mrs. Welt's meeting with the press, stated that she "made a very favorable im 9 - ression with her wide know]- edge and deep orientation in Jewish affairs here and all over the world."
