Jews Killed
In Action
2 Brothers Among Victims;
City Represented by Over
I25 Jewish Soldiers
The recent return of Pvt. Jo-
seph Brenner of the Canadian
Army to his home in Windsor,
following his release from a Na-
zi prison camp in- the first ex-
change of war prisoners, this
week brought to light the un-
usually large number of Jews
from Windsor now serving in the
Canadian forces.
Windsor—whose Jewish popu-
lation numbers less than 1,000
families—is represented by more
than 125 Jews, as of September,
1943, according to a list obtained
by Rabbi Benjamin Groner of
Shaar Hashomayin Synagogue.
So far, four have given their
lives and many have met the
enemy and have been wounded.
Pvt. Brenner, whose family re-
sides at 435 E. Sandwich St.,
Windsor, .was one of nine mem-
bers of the Essex Scottish Regi-,
ment which suffered heavy loss-
es in the historic and costly raid
on Dieppe a year ago last Au-
gust, who returned to Windsor
together. Captured by the Nazis,
they spent 14 months in German
prison camps.
2 Brothers Killed
Two of the Windsor Jews
killed in action so far are two
of four brothers in the service,
Pilot Joseph Cherkinsky and Sgt.
Arthur Cherkinsky.
The other two heroes who lost
their lives are Pvt. Samuel Ber-
ger and A/c2 Leonard Feldman.
Cherkinsky, 24, was killed
an operational flight over
gland on May 5, 1943. He was
to rest in the Canadian Mil-
itary Cemetery at Evesham, Eng.
Sgt. Cherkinsky, 26, a flight en-
gineer, lost his life over the Eng-
lish Channel while returning
from the first British bombing
raid over Berlin, March 1, 1943:
He was buried in Holland. (Hol-
land is occupied territory).
3rd Brother in RCAF
A third brother, Pvt. Murray
Cherkinsky is a gunner in the
Canadian army. Leading Air
Craftsman Alec Cherkinsky re-
cently was honorably discharged
from the RCAF. Their mother
resides on Cataraqui St.
Many Windsor families are
represented by two sons in the
Canadian forces, the Bercussons,
the Feldmans, the Fogels, the
goldens, the Harrises, the Katz-
mans, the Levines, the Orecklins,
the Pierces, the Raetzens and
many others.
