Friday, December 24, 1943 THE JEWISH NEWS Yeshivath Beth Yehudah Outlines Educational Policy in Statement Yeshivath Beth Yehudah this week issued a statement outlin- ing its educational policy. The statement follows: "The Hebrew Talmudical Academy Yeshivath Beth Yehu- dah aims to give its . students an intensive training in Torah and to prepare them for Jewish liv- , ing in conformity with our re- ligious law. Yeshivah 'eduCation, therefore, has two-fold purpose: to impart the knowledge of Bible and Talmud and to develop a healthy Jewish personality. For the realization of these - objec- tives, the Yeshivah employs a thoroughly integrated cirriculum and extra-curricular activities. Instruction is given in a maxi- mum number of hours by men of tested pedagogical ability and proven religious fervor, in an in- viting physical environment and through the use of the Most mod- ern educational methods. A Sad Spectacle "For more than a generation we have been witnesses to the sad spectacle of the rapid disap- pearance from Jewish life of that complete personality, well versed in our lore and zealously devoted 1, the upkeep of our traditional institutions. The causes of this decline are definitely to be traced to the failure of those systems of Jewish education which were satisfied with a mininium • of knowledge and practice. and, therefore; could not possibly train the children to follow in the footsteps. of their fathers. "While welcoming every sin- cere effort for the extension of Jewish schooling to all boys and girls in our community, we are nevertheless convinced' that the future of a full-grown Jewry in America depends upon those of our children who will be willing to overcome the difficulties in the path of a complete Jewish education and will be provided with harmonious guidance from early childhood through adoles- cence to Jewish manhood. Elementary Program "In order to fill this need, to meet the request of a large num- ber of Jewish parents in our community and to prepare stu- dents for its advanced classes where Talmud and Codes are studied, Yeshivath Beth Yehudah has carefully developed an ele- mentary department. Yeshivah education, from the very begin- ning, imbues the child learning the Aleph-Beth with the sanctity of the Torah and a love for Israel_. "It brings the pupil in immedi- ate and direct relationship with the two fundamental institutions of Judaism, the Beth I -Iakneses and the Beth Hamedrash, the synagogue and the house of study, Both the environment and the teacher's attitude are conducive to arouse in the student a sense of pride in his Jewishness. In the shortest possible time the In the Bnai Brith ritual the seven lights of the Menorah are illuminated to the accompani- ment of a special prayer. The lights, in order, stand for LIGHT, JUSTICE, PEACE, TRUTH, BE- NEVOLENCE, BROTHERLY LOVE and HARMONY, the lat- ter three being the three virtues which make up Bnai Brith's motto. pupil is introduced to the una- bridged sacred texts, which are explained to him in conformity with the rich treasures of the oral Law. Thus, the study of dietary and Sabbath laws, the feStivals and their prescribed customs leads to the practical observance of the Mitzvoth. School for Girls "The Ladies of the YeShivah, in sponsoring the Beth. Jacob Re- ligious School for Girls and the Beth Jacob Kindergarten, are working toward the above goal in the field of the education of the daughters of Israel. "In its desire to achieve a con- gruity of learning and living, Yeshivath Beth Yehudah has chosen a _ s its motto the words of Aboth: 'Not theory but practice is the aim of study'."
