H

ANUKAH, commemorating the triumphs of the Maccabees in the

battle for religious and national freedom, is the festival of joy for children

and inspiration to all Israel. Wherever Jews reside in civilized spheres—

in Palestine, where the group of happy youngsters in this picture was

photographed; in the United States and in all democratic countries—the

joy of youth on Hanukah reflects the hopes and aspirations that all chil-

dren everywhere shall be grantecl the freedoms that are the just rights of

all human beings. In this spirit- we observe the Festival of the Maccabees

in this period of war, with the hope that the ideal which moved the

Jewish heroes 2,100 years ago to stake everything for the cause of

liberty shall again be the motivating force to lead humanity to victory

over tyranny and barbarism the world over, in our own time.
