Dear Boys and Girls:
Next Tuesday evening, the
first Hanukah candle will be lit
in Jewish homes throughout the
world—wherever Jews are still
free to celebrate their holidays.
I am happy to have one of our
young readers—Sidney Zilber, a
leader in the Junior Congrega-
tion of Shaarey Zedek—relate the
story of Hanukah in this week's
column. Sidney is the son'of Mr.
and Mrs. Israel . Zilber of 3299
Calvert Ave.
Next week, you will have an
opportunity to read more inter-
esting articles and poems about
Hanukah.
This is a great time to cele-
brate an event that marks the
heroism of Jews.
Hanukah is one of our most
impressive festivals, and I am
certain that you will all enjoy
the festival.
I wish you all a pleasant Hanu-
kah and a happy Sabbath.
UNCLE DANIEL.,

HANUKAH

By SIDNEY ZILBER
One of our most popular fes-
tivals, Hanukah, is looked for-
ward to with much interest by
Jewish boys and girls.
The story of Hanukah is truly
an interesting one as it deals
with the Jewish people's fight
for freedom.
Antiochus, the tyrannical king
of Syria, conquered Palestine
and after receiving a large bribe,
made the wicked Menelaus High
Priest.
Menelaus told Antiochus that
the only way to exterminate the
Jews would be to prevent the

Men's Wear

Jews from worshiping and from
following the rules of the Torah.
Therefore Antiochus ordered the
desecration of the Temple and
a death penalty for any Jew
caught worshipping the Lord.
But the Jews would not submit
and under the leadership of Mat-
tathias, his son Judah Maccabee,
and Judah's brothers, the Jews
revolted against their Syrian
oppressors, just as the people of
the world are now fighting
against the German barbarians.
After many battles Judah and
his followers recaptured Jeru-
salem and immediately set to
work repairing and cleansing the
Temple. The Jews were so hap-
py- because of the recapture of
Jerusalem that they feated eight
days, when Hanukah was first
celebrated.
We light eight candles on
Hanukah because when the Ko-
hanim relit the Perpetual Light
they found only enough clean oil
that had not been polluted by
the Syrians to burn for only one
day. But this small amount mir-
aculously lasted eight days—un-
til fresh oil could be brought to
the Temple.
There are many interesting
and exciting things we can do
on Hanukah.
Of course, every member of
the family wants his turn at
lighting the Hanukah candles
and we also look forward to
Hanukah parties both in our
homes and Jewish schools.
Every child has a great deal
of fun for spnining the Dreidel
for Hanukah Gelt and the ex-
change of presents adds to the
celebration.
Hanukah is indeed one of our
finest and happiest holidays.
