AMERICA

A complete shakeup in the Boston po-
lice department because of what he called
"anti-Semitic lawlessness" which gave
"assistance to the enemies of the United
States," was demanded by Attorney Gen-
eral Robert T. Bushnell on the eve of the
expiration of the term of office of Police
Commissioner Joseph F. Timilty. Mr.
Bushnell's .demand was voiced in a letter
to Governor Leverett. Saltonstall on whose
desk lies the problem of the next Police
Commissioner.
The International Red Cross has de-
clared that it can assure the distribution
of food to Jews in some occupied terri-
tories, it was asserted by Dr. Isaac Levin,
leader of the Orthodox Agudath Israel,
writing in the Jewish Morning Journal.
Lt. Kenneth Schlasinger, of Streeter, N.
Dak., who with his Flying Fortress crew
made his way to friendly territory after
their plane had crashed in a Nazi-held
area, is one of the most decorated men of
the war, holding 13 awards: the Distin-
guished Flying Cross, the Air Medal, ten
Oak Leaf Clusters and the Purple Heart.
Now back in this country on leave, the
bombardier is awaiting. reassignment.
In the face of opposition from the Po-
lish and French delegations to anything
except outright expulsion of those Nazis
who now are occupying homes of "dis-
placed" Jews and Poles, the whole ques-
tion of repatriation is being held up at the
conference of the United Nations Relief
and Rehabilitation Administration at At-
lantic City. Another proposal applies the
term "repatriation" to the Nazis as well as
to their victims.
Dr. Alfred Klee, leading German Zion-
ist, former members of the Board of the
Berlin Jewish Community and the Reich-

sentative body of German Jewry, died at
69 years of age in a concentration camp at
Westerbork, H011and, according to a report
that has reached Geneva.
Lorenz Hart, one of the ouist'nding
lyricists in America died in New York at
the age of 48. He was a member of the
team of Rodgers and Hart, sometimes call-
ed the "American Gilbert and Sullivan."
Dr. Curt Graser, director of the State
Art Library in Berlin from 1924 until the
advent of the Nazis to power in 1933, died
at the age of 64 at Lake Placid, New York.
He was an authority on Chinese and Jap-
anese art on which subjects he had written
several books.

served as JNF Sabbath in local

announced this week. . Daniel
Temchin is chairman and Irving
Schlussel is co-chairman of the
JNF Synagogue Committee and
will have charge of arrange-
ments for the Sabbath Hanukah
observances.
Plans also are being made for

tion at the Jewish Community
Center on Feb. • 9. The latest

there will be a musical program

New Golden Book
Mr. Hordes also announces
that a new Golden Book is being
introduced for children of the
age of 13, to be known as Sefer
Bar Mitzvah and Bas Mitzvah.
Inscriptions will cost $15 . and
certificates will be issued to
those whose names will be in-
scribed in this book.
All JNF Council meetings
henceforth will be held the first
and third Wednesday of each
month.
Rose Greeneald Fried, former
secretary of the JNF Council of
Detroit, was honored with a re-
ception after the Council meeting
last Tuesday, in honor of her re-
' cent marriage in Wilkes-Barre,
Pa. Mrs. Fried's name will be in-
scribed in the Golden Book of
the JNF in Jerusalem.
Mrs. Twersky Honored
In recognition of her services
as chairman of the box clearance
committee, the name- of Mrs. Ab-
-. rah- am Twersky also will be in-
scribed in the Golden Book.

Boston Replaces
Chief of Police

BOSTON.—Joseph F. Timilty,
chief of police during whose term
of office the disturbances took
place during which Jews were
attacked by hoodlums, has been
replaced by Col. Thomas F. Sul-
livan.
Timilty's term expired on Nov.
25. Sullivan's nomination was
confirmed by the State Execu-
tive Council.

Mizrachi Drive

Gains Momentum

Reports received from captains
in charge of the local Mizrachi
membership drive indicate thit
new members are joining the
ranks daily. Prospects are that
the goal of 1,000 new members
will be fulfilled.
Congregation Bnai Zion, Con-
gregation Bnai Israel and Con-
gregation Bnai Jacob have
signed up as Mizrachi syna-
gogues. Isadore Sosnick, Jacob
Nosanchuk and Max Kaminsky,
the presidents, have promised to
enroll their entire memberships
in the Mizrachi ranks. Daniel
Temchin is signing up life mem-
bers in the 'organization.
This membership drive also
includes an educational program,
and many who knew little about
Mizrachi and the Zionist move-
ment in general are being taught
the importance of the religious
Zionist movement.
Mizrachi is making elaborate
plans to celebrate the completion
of the membership drive at the
32nd anniversary dinner, to take
place at the Shaarey Zedek on
Jan. 16. The induction of the
new members will take place at
that time. An outstanding per-
sonality in the movement is ex-
