American Jews joined with the Jews of Palestine in
severe condemnation of the latest evidences of suppression
of the freedom of the press and speech in the Jewish Home-
land, by the British administration, with the announcement
that the American Zionist Emergency Council blamed the
Palestine administration for the murder of a Jewish colonist
and called for the removal of
the officials responsible for the
disturbances.
The Council, whose co-chair-
men are Dr. Abba Hillel Silver
and Dr. Stephen S. Wise, speak-

Dr. Ernst Bergmann, personal representative of Dr.
Chaim Weimann, distinguished scientist, chief chemist of the
Daniel Sieff Research Institute of Rehovoth, Palestine, will
address a meeting of patrons and friends of the Institute
next Wednesday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Fred A.
Ginsburg. This gathering will commence this year's drive
for Detroit's quota for the Sieff Institute.
Dr. Bergmann comes here at
the invitation of Abraham Cooper
member of the national board of
directors and chairman of the
Detroit chapter; Fred M. Butzel
and Nate S. Shapero, members of
the Institute's national advisory
board, to give a first hand ac-
count of the famous research
institute's achievements during
the past 10 years, the part it is
playing in helping win the war
and in assuring a better future
for the Jewish National Home.
Otustanding Chemist
At 40, Dr. Bergmann is one of
the outstanding men in the field
of chemistry. Lecturer at Uni-
versity of Berlin and co-author
of a widely-used textbook on or-
ganic chemistry, he was about to
be made full professor when Hit-
ler's edict drove him from Ger-
many in 1933.
Protege and friend of the late
Prof. Richard Willstaetter, Jewish
Nobel prize winner and renowned
scientist of Munich University,
Dr. Bergmann came to London,
bearing letters of introduction to
Dr. Weizmann, and the meeting
marked the beginning of a close
association which has lasted until
this day.
After several months of -re-
search in a London laboratory,
Dr. Bergmann went to Palestine
late in 1933, as Dr. Weizmann's
representative, to supervise • the
building and organization of the
Daniel Sieff Research Institute—
a project which had enlisted the
interest of Dr. Weizmann and of
which he is honorary director.
Tdday he heads the staff of 31
scientists and their assistants at
the Institute. He is also guest
lecturer at the Hebrew University
in Jerusalem.
Industrial Development
For a number of years presi
dent of the Palestine. Chemical
Society, Dr. Bergmann's work
has contributed immeasurably to
industrial development in the
Middle East. Upon outbreak of
the war, Dr. Bergman returned
to London at the request of Dr.
Weizmann to continue several
projects in industrial research
initiated at the Rehovoth labora-
tories. Last year he came to the
U. S. to assist Dr. Weizmann in
scientific activities the latter has
under way in this country.
Dr. Bergmann's recent lecture
before a distinguished audience
at Mount Sinai Hospital, New
York, on "Trends in Modern
Chemotherapy"—the treatment of
tuberculosis, leprosy and cancer
—was an event in scientific cir-
cles. His address here next Wed-
nesday on "Scientific Research
and the Future of Palestine" will
be Dr. Bergmann's last public ap-
pearance before his return to
England. He expects to leave for
London the following • week.
