Friday, November 26, 1943 THE JEWISH NEWS Congregational Activities Sabbath—the Agency Of Perfection in The Life of the Jew By RABBI ISAAC STOLLMAN "And G-d had finished on the seventh day MS work which He had made" (Gen. 11-2), and thus Creation had been completed by the time the seventh day had arrived and the institution of the Sabbath had found its inception. This is not a mere abstract spec- ulation, but it is of the very bone and marrow of our experi- ence as a people. The Sabbath had imported meaning and content into our lives; the Sabbath had given to the world faith in G-d, a belief that human beings had a spark of the divine in them, a belief that the whole of Creation is pervaded with the spirit of G-d. The Sabbath had given form and meaning to our lives as Jews. It had been the prime factor which had rendered our lives complete. The Midrash rightly calls the Sabbath the faithful helpmate of the Jewish people. Unified Agency This sacred day has been an unifying agency, a means for ex- pressing ourselves , as members of society. It has furthermore determined the pattern of our daily doings during the week days. In Europe, for example, where there were no distinct social or- ganizations to direct Jewish life and activity, the Sabbath per- formed that office, giving ex- pression to Jewish social needs, effecting solidarity and coopera- tion among the members of the community. The Bible rightly states that when Moses had taught the Jews concerning their social behavior and obligations, he had stressed above all else the Sabbath as occupying the most important place in the community. All over the country, in the larger Jewish centers, a move- ment is on foot for Sabbath ob- servance. Help Restore Sabbath The Rabbis are persuaded that the Jewish grocers should be able to help restore the Sabbath to its position of primacy in Jewish life, by constituting themselves the pioneers in this great effort. Jewish grocers! you have been afforded the privilege of helping in the historic task of leading the people back to Sabbath observ- ance, something for which gener- ations to come will bless you. Close your stores on this day of rest! May the blessing of G-d be upon you all, and may you all feel the joy and repose to become your lot as a reward for observ- ing the rest of the sacred Sabbath Day!
