Biddle Urges Public to Help
Fight Anti-Semitism in U.S.

Attorney Genera! Shocked Over Spread of Anti - Jewish
Activity Among School Children; Says Axis Propa-
ganda Has Been Checked in Country

NEW YORK (JTA)—A call to the American people to help the
government in the work of combatting anti-Jewish activities in the
U. S. was voiced here this week by U. S. Attorney General Biddle
addressing a dinner of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America
at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel.
It is profoundly shocking, Mr. Biddle said, that anti-Semitism
should have developed among school children, who, left to them-
selves, could hardly have turned against other children merely
because they were Jewish. "The desecration of Jewish cemeteries
is hideously like what we have seen in those countries which have
been conquered by the Germans," he stated.
As Americans, we must not tolerate this outbreak of the Axis
pattern in our country."
The .Attorney General emphasized that "the approach of all of
us to the troublesome problems of minorities cannot any longer be
loca for provincial, or in terms even of the difficulties facing any
particular- group, or involving the traditions or the tenets of any
single race or any one religion."
Axis propaganda in this country, which took the form of vicious
anti-Semitic teachings, has been checked, but the fruit of this propa-
ganda is still with us, Mr. Biddle pointed out.
"1 suggest that what is greatly needed is a broader and more
intelligent use of the moral and educational influence of the com-
munity," he stated.

The Palestine government has bowed
to the persistent demands of the Jewish
Agency and has agreed to the granting
of special allowances to needy families of
Palestinian Jewish volunteers, men and
women.

ZURICH (JTA)—The reappearance on the streets of Sofia of
many Jews who were deported from the city to other parts of Bul-
gari a and the consequent protests from pro-Nazi elements in the
Bulgarian capital evoked an "explanation" over the Sofia radio this
week. The broadcast "explained" that the returning Jews are per-

MONTREAL (JTA)—The campaign which French-Canadian re-
actionary elements in the province of Quebec have been waging in
an effort to prevent the admission into Canada of any refugees from
Europe received a setback this week when Minister of Mines and
ReseLirces, J. A. Crerar, who is the official responsible for immigra-
tion matters, denied the allegation that Jews are negotiating to settle
100.000 European refugees in Quebec.
The charge was made by Maurice Duplessis, former premier of
QUeiwc, who frequently has been accused of having fascist leanings.
Dup.:essis exhibited what he purported to be a photostatic copy of a
letter from the "International Zionist Brotherhood" to Rabbi Jesse
Schwartz, executive director of the Zionist Federation of Canada,
stating that a meeting of the "brotherhood" in New York had
decided to give financial support to any political candidate in Canada

prisonment imposed on Eliahu Sacharoff, a Solel Borieh contractor.
