UHS Membership Drive
On for Several Weeks

In a radio address over Hyman
Altman's Jewish Radio Hour on
Saturday night, Rabbi Max J.
Wohlgelerenter made an appeal
to the community for Sabbath
observance.
Rabbi Wohlgelernter revealed
that there is strong sentiment
among the grocers of Detroit to
close their stores on the Sabbath.
"Last Tuesday evening a meet-
ing of the United Grocers' Asso-
ciation was held at Jericho Tem-
ple with the participation of the
Detroit Rabbinate and a repre-
sentative group of Jewish wom-
en delegated by the Women's
League for Sabbath Observance.
The grocers went on record fa-
voring, in principle, the observ-
ance of the Sabbath as a day of
rest by Jewish businessmen in
the Twelfth St., Linwood, and
Dexter sections.
"In order to carry out this de-
cision in a practical manner, the
U.G.A. will have a referendum
vote among members, followed
by a general meeting to devise
plans for the closing on Shabbos
of the 80 grocery stores included
in- the association.
"The return of Sabbath Ob-
servance in strictly Jewish
neighborhoods is bound to have
its effect upon internal Jewish
morale as well as upon our rela-
tionship with non-Jews. Our
growing generation of boys and
girls will be reared in an at-
mosphere saturated with respect
to Jewish traditions and the eter-
nal Values of our sacred law.
"Our neighbors will respect us'
more readily when—adhering to
our age old heritage—we shall
refrain from work on the Sab-
bath and keep that day holy in
accordance with the command-
ment of God."

The annual membership en-
rollment of the United Hebrew
Schools will be continued for
several weeks. It is the inten-
tion of the membership commit-
tee, headed by Dr. A. E. Bern-
stein, Julius Berman and Morris
Fishman, to reach this year the
goal of 500 new members.
The next meeting will be held
