A Hero at Nine

When we speak of the hun-
dreds of thousands of Jews who
must be helped through the
present War Chest campaign,
such figures have a tendency to
obscure the plight and the need
of the many individuals involved.
Let us for a moment go behind
the statistics and
consider the case
of a 9-year-old
refugee boy, one
of many refu-
gees who risked
their lives to
cross the Pyre-
nees from Nazi-
held France to
Spain. This
youngster w a s

parents had been deported to
Poland by the Nazis. Cautioned
not to give himself away, the
boy feigned dumbness. Whenever
guards stopped him he would
shake his head and point help-
lessly to his mouth.
ACTIVITIES IN SOCIETY
Lt. (j.g.) Alfred Krell has returned to his post in New .York
City after a short leave spent with his family.
Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Fox of Kentucky Ave. and their mother,
Mrs. Peter Vass of the Wilshire Hotel, left on Sunday to spend a
week in New York City.
Mrs. Walter Lilenfield of Winnettka, Ill., is spending a week
with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Day Krolik of Canterbury Rd.
Mrs. Mark Fleishman of the Lee Crest Apt. has returned from
a visit in- Cincinnati.
Mr. and Mrs. Albert Michels of -Los Angeles left on Wednesday
for New York City after a few days' visit with Mrs. Monroe Rosen-
field of the Belcrest Hotel. -
Mrs. Leo Croll has returned to White Sulphur Springs, Va.,
where Capt. Croll is stationed at the Ashford General Hospital,
after a few days visit in the city.
Mrs. Fred Ginsburg left on Friday for . Norton, Mass., where
she will visit her daughter, Mignon, who is attending the House
of Pines School for Girls. From there she will go to Washington
to visit her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Ruskin.
Mrs. Milton Doner of Renfrew Rd. left on Wednesday for New
York City to visit with Lt. (j.g.) Doner who is stationed at the
Brooklyn Navy Yard.
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hamburger of Chicago Blvd: have re-
turned from California where they spent the last few weeks
visiting with their son, Pit. Jack D. Hamburger, who is stationed
in Pasadena with the Army Specialists Training Unit.
Mrs. Benjamin Wolfe of Grand Rapids is spending two weeks
with her daughter, Mrs. Louis Krause of Webb Ave., and her son-
in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Burak of Longfellow Ave.
Mrs. David Carpenter (Saralee Keys) has come from McAllen,
Tex.. where Pvt. Carpenter is stationed with the Army Air Force
at Moore Field, to spend several weeks with her parents, Mr. sand

Mrs. Andrew B. Lorre of .Kentucky Ave. has invited a group
of her friends to a miscellaneous shower to be given in her home
this Friday evening, complimenting Miss Edith Miller, whose mar-
