CHR/STADELPHIAN ZIONISTS
Many columns back, we had something
to say about the interesting religious
group known as the Christadelphians.
Now, from the columns of Zionist Re-
view of London, we take the following
interesting piece referring to this group
of Christians who are such strong be-
lievers in a Jewish Palestine:

It is most heartening to note how
many religious organizations in this
country are deeply interested in the
Zionist movement. There are some
ten or twelve journals of various
kinds, which feature news of Pal-
estine and the Zionist movement in
very great detail. This association of
British Christian sects with the
movements for a return of the Jews
to Palestine is a tradition which goes
back a hundred years or so. Promi-
nent among the sects which support
the Zionist movement are the Chris-
tadelphians, and I am reminded of a
very amusing incident which hap-
pened some years ago. I was visiting
a provincial town to address a pub-
lic meeting in company with a fa-
mous Christadelphian leader, Mr.
Williani Grant, a Scottish banker,
who died some years ago. Mr. Grant
asked for permission for the mem-
bers of the local ecclesia to attend
the meeting. Permission was given
and at 7:30 p. m., the time of com-
mencement, the hall was filled with
Christadelphians. • The Jews, as is
their wont, began to arrive half an
hour or an hoUr late. Mr. Grant, in
opening the meeting, said: "You
Jews may not understand the special
interest we have in the return of
Jews to Zion, nor do I expect you to
follow the theological argument by
which we believe that when the
Messiah comes, Christians will share
in the benefit of the Messianic age
only after the Jews had been re-
stored. But one thing you will un-
derstand, and that is, when the Mes-
siah does come, somebody will have
to be there to meet him, for I am
sure that the Jews will be late."

BUT TIMES ARE CHANGING
This pun could serve as a rather pain-
ful dig in the ribs of Jews. On more than
one occasion, non-Jews have been the
first to endorse a liberation movement,
with Jews being too timid to take the
initiative.
-But it could be much worse. As long
as the Christadelphians, and other
friends, are not the proverbial Shamosim
who are not only the first to open the
doors to sanctuaries, but are also the last
on the scene to officiate at the closing
of the assembly.
Fortunately, • the Jewish liberation
movement has made such rapid strides
that we may be sure of Zionists holding
the fort.
Perhaps it will not be necessary after
all to depend upon friends of other faiths
to be ready to greet the Messiah, because
Jews will not be late after all.
Isn't it a sign of the approach of the
Messiah that Jews are learning to be in
the reception line in time for the coming
of liberation?

Interesting Lesson in Ben Aronin's
Latest Novel, 'Cavern of Destiny'

Ben Aronin, author of six other books,
makes archaeological exploration the
thesis of his latest novel, "Cavern of Des-
tiny, just published by Behrman's Jew-
ish Book House, 1261 Broadway, New
York.
This novel is replete with excitement,
leading up to the finding of the ancient
Breastplate of Judgment used in the
Temple of Judaea. One of the jewels was
missing. After a long search that, too, is
recovered.
But in order to guarantee peace and
security among all faiths in Palestine, all
of whom looked to the Breastplate as a
holy object, one of the heroes of this
novel goes up in a plane and drops the
Breastplate back into the Mediterranean.
When he returns, he explains:
"The only Caverns of Destiny for my
people are the furrows of the earth. Out
of them will come the most precious of
all treasures—the golden grain, the bread
of man. All of Palestine is Our third
Temple and every man and woman who
labors here a Kohen—a priest."
"Cavern of Destiny" reads well and
has an interesting moral lesson for those
concerned that Palestine should be re-
built as an ideal Jewish commonwealth..

Remove die Shackles o Slavery

A Message to War Chest Workers and Contributors

By WILLIAM ROSENWALD

National Chairman, United Jewish Appeal for Refugees,
Overseas Needs and Palestine

The opening of the War Chest campaign will, undoubtedly, assure
a concerted effort on the part of all sections of the Jewish community
of Detroit to answer with deeds of unusual generosity the cries for
help that come to us from the distress areas of the world.
Not only is the rescue of our co-religionists a solemn responsibility
of all American Jews in this critical period, but it actually represents
an additional contribution to democratic
victory. In endorsing the campaign of
the United Jewish Appeal, President
Roosevelt has declared that "the preser-
vation of the life of those whom the
tyrants sought to destroy has been sup-
ported not only out of humanitarian con-
siderations, but for the sake of sustaining
the spirit of freedom and democracy in
the lands where it has been temporarily
crushed." Moreover, former Ambassador
Joseph C. Grew has said that the work
of the United Jewish Appeal is "part of
winning the war."
It is part of winning the war because
through the reconstructive and rehabili-
tative activities of the Joint Distribution*
Committee, United Palestine Appeal and
National Refugee Service, many thou-
sands of refugees have become valuable
allies in the fight for freedom. For
example, the National Refugee Service
William Rosenwald
is now re-training hundreds of newcom-
ers to enable them to take their place alongside the other workers in
war production industries. Many young men who were helped to
become adjusted to the American way of life are now in the armed
forces in North Africa and the Pacific area. In other words, many of
those whom we are called upon to help are the - very persons who
return our aid ten-fold in the form of devoted service to the cause of
human liberty,
As an example, the records shoW that many refugees took part in
the stirring Allied victory in Tunisia. In the American army there
were young men who had been helped by the National Refugee Serv-
ice, in the French African Corps there were soldiers who had been
rehabilitated by the Joint Distribution Committee, and in the British
forces there were Jewish settlers from Palestine who had received
assistance from the United ,PaleStine Appeal. Thse refugees were
'among the trocps whiCh - freed the jeWs and other elements of the popu-
lation from bondage under Hitler. We . are seeing heart-warming-
demonstrations of how the victims have become the victors and the
helpless have becorne The helpers.
In the hours of greatest tragedy.ancl suffering for the Jews in vari-
ous parts of the world, our contributions hate sustained their faith and
their hope. Today we-must gb forward, with the resolve to help strike
the shackles of slavery from our felloW-Jews and to give them every
opportunity for reiiabilifation and-.reconstruction in a world of peace
and freedom. It is my earnest hope that the Jews of Detroit will give
their utmost support to 'the -Var..- CheSt Campaign.

WASHINGTON VIEWS

The new organizations which continue
to spring from the group which organ-
ized the Committee for a Jewish Army
were the subject of a discussion in offi-
cial Washington . . . Responsible Jewish
leaders take the position that high offi-
cials in Washington are themselveS re-
sponsible to a certain extent for the ac-
tivities of this group since its leaders are
received by, these officials . . . We under-
stand that the Joint Emergency Commit-
tee for European Jewish Affairs decided
some time ago to come out with a state-
ment defining its attitude to- this group
and even appointed one - of its members
to draw up the text . . . This text has so
far not been drawn up.

Did you hear of the plan to have an
Office of Minority Relations established
at the Department of the Interior? . . .
The father of this plan is Senator Guy
M. Gillette, Iowa Democrat . . . He was
the head of a committee that investi-
gated the last presidential election cam-
paign and compiled a huge collection of
anti-Jewish campaign literature . . .
Anxious to prevent the distribution of
such literature in the forthcoming pri-
mary elections next Spring, he intro-
duced a bill in the Senate suggesting, the
establishment of a "national minorities"
office by the ,government . . The Office .
of Minority Relations, if established, will
have power to investigate attacks against
religious, racial and national groups.

ORCHIDS TO WINCHELL-

Orchids of his own variety to Master
Gossip Columnist Winchell for that nifty
about the N. Y. Times. Winchell wrote:
"The Times recently refused an ad about
stopping hatred over here. Said it was
not of public interest. But the Times runs
ads on Hitler's book. Who cares? Ex-
cept Hitler's rooters?"

COLLABORATIONISTS—

Gerald P. Winrod, hate-peddler from
down Kansas way, has some of his ad-
jutants raising hell (clandestinely, of
course) down Puerto Rica way . . .
And while on the subject—when will
something be done about those indict-
ments against our collaborationists, Mr.
Biddle? . . You know, the indictments
which were first handled by Maloney,
and of late by Rogge. What ever hap-
pened to them? .. . The latest report is
that Father Coughlin, of radio and "sil-
ver dealings" fame, has been making
quite a whirlwind tour, holding secret
conferences and preparing for a come-
back.

Thunderbolt pilot . . . Although his -craft
developed engine trouble, he succeeded
in carrying out his mission successfully
. . He received the Air Medal this week
in recognition of hiS bravery.

A- Rothschild has joined the ranks of
the
U. S. Army ... He is Baron Gilbert
HERE AND THERE
Rothschild, a member of the Rothschild
Peter Lehman, son of ex - Governor
Herbert Lehman, is now the hero of the family who came here from France after
day . . . He had two close brushes with the fall of Paris . . . He has volunteered
the Nazis while fighting over Emden as a to serve as a private.

MAX REINHARDT
Max Reinhardt was a very proud Jew
. . . He loved orthodox synagogues, and
frequently visited them in the company
of Meyer Weisgal, his best friend in
America ... Reform Jewry left him cold
. . . Rabbis without beards, he said, look-
ed too much like miscast actors . . . Rein-
hardt's dream was to establish an inter-
national theater in Palestine . He was
built to live a hundred years . . . He died
of a broken - heart . . . The commercial
producers of Hollywood and Broadway
never realized that Max Reinhardt was
not just a director but the creator of the
modern theater . . . Instead of sitting at
his feet they trampled all over him . .
Always the great uncomplaining aristo-
crat, he preferred to remain idle rather
than accept offers that were beneath his
standards . . . The closeness of his rela-
tionship with his sons, Gottfried and
Wolfgang, and with his Aryan wife,
Helene Thimig, who followed him into
exile, was beautiful . . . When he knew
that he was dying he called them in one
by one and -with a philosophical smile
told them not to mourn . . . Reinhardt
was a great artist, but a still greater
man.

PERSONAL DETAILS
Here are some things the newspapers
will never tell you about the late Max
Reinhardt • . . He never traveled without
his own bed-linen, even on overnight
trips . . He never went to bed before
5 a. m. . . . He brushed his teeth six
times a day, for 20 minutes at a time . •
His imported cigars cost a dollar and a
hall apiece ... He always wrote his own
speeches, and never permitted any ghost-
writing to be done for him . . . He never
saved money, even in his most prosper-
ous days . . . The only time in his life
that he got up before noon was when
Joe Brainin, his press representative, ar-
ranged for a Sunday forenoon broadcast
in 1939.

READER'S GUIDE
James Waterman Wise's "Very Truly
Ours" deserves to be a best-seller . . It
most probably will become one .. Few
war books reflect so intimately the
thinking and emotions of our fighting
boys as does this splendidly edited col-
lection of letters 'never intended for pub-
lication ... Bravo, -Jimmy ... And your
donation of half your royalties to the
USO is a generous gesture.
Edgar Ansel Mowrer, the reliable and
courageous foreign correspondent; has
this to say about Pierre van Paassen's
"The Forgotten Ally": "The Information
Service of His Majesty's Government
would do well to answer Van Paassen's
charges—not with a blanket denial or
mere indignation; but calmly, chapter
and verse . . Success here would help
good Anglo-American relations, essential
to the world."
1 If you want to know more about Sam
Schulman, known as FDR-'s favorite pho-
tographer, be sure you get his autobiog-
raphy, just published and entitled
"Where's Sammy?" . . . As an ace news
photographer Sammy has been getting
around, and isn't always easy to locate.

THIS AND THAT
Aryan musicians with Jewish wives
are still permitted to be members of
Austrian orchestras and bands—but they
are forbidden - to appear as soloists, or to
play on radio programs.
An impressive galaxy of leaders, in-
cluding Carl Van Doren, Pierre van
Paassen, Kenneth Leslie, Mrs. Stephen S.
Wise, Arthur Upham Pope and William
Schieffelin, is sponsoring an action to
outlaw anti-Semitism in this country.
M. Maldwin Fertig is slated to become
the executive chairman of a new anti-
Semitic committee of the American Jew-
ish Congress.

Israel Immortal

By YEHUDAH HALEVI

(Written in 1150)

The sun and moon for ever shine—by day
And night they mark the Eternal's high
design.
Changeless and tireless, speeding on
their way,
The sun and moon for ever shine.
Symbols are they of Israel's chosen line,
A nation still, though countless foes com-
bine;
Smitten by God and healed by God are
they;
They shall not fear, safe 'neath the Rock
divine,
Nor cease to be, until men cease to say,
The sun and moon for ever - shine...
