Chest Causes Are Our Causes

By DR. A. M. HERSHMAN
Rabbi, Congregation Shaarey Zedek

Of all things, it is most difficult to discuss the self-evident.
To those who have given even a moment's thought to the
desperate plight of our people, it is self-evident that the
appeal of the War Chest of Metropolitan Detroit should evoke
a ready and generous response.
Atlas-like, American Jewry must carry
the whole weight of the Jewish world on its
shoulders. Our immediate task is two-fold:
to preserve Jewish lives and to preserve Jew-
ish life.
It is our Heaven-appointed mission to
save Jewish lives. Our people in Nazi-
dominated Europe and in the small neutral
countries where they have found refuge, turn
to us for help and succor. We dare not fail
them. If we will not help them, who will?
The stirring call comes to us: "Deliver them Dr. Hershman
that are drawn unto death; and forbear not to rescue those
that are ready to be slain." We must heed this call.
No less urgent is our duty to save Jewish life. European
Jewry, for a thousand years and more the standard-bearer
of Judaism, the guardian of Jewish life, is now bleeding. We
must take up and carry on the Work. The maintenance of
Jewish educational institutions, the upbuilding of Palestine,
and other constructive activities will go a long way towards
preserving Jewish life.

Nor must we forget the mar* significant causes which
are included in the War Chest program. They are our causes
and should receive our whole-hearted support.

The response should be immediate and adequate. We
must guard against the dangers of "too late" and "too little."
Let us do all we can to provide the War Chest with the
wherewithal to carry on its work during the coming year.
