Rabbi Sperka to Start
New Series Over WWJ

The catastrophe which has be
fallen the Jewish communities o f
Europe is not merely an expres
sion of Nazi brutality but a vio
lent and tragic manifestation o f
the collapse of moral and spirit-
ual standards in many parts of
the world. The suppression of
the religious freedom of all faiths
in Nazi-held countries, the arrest
and imprisonment of clergy of
all denominations, the burning of
synagogues and religious books,
the extirpation of every last ves-
tige of Jewish cultural and
spiritual life, reveal in part the
moral crisis of our age.
It is therefore the sense of the
American Jewish Conference
that the physical redemption of
the stricken peoples of the earth
and the assurance of their future
rights and liberties depends in a
large measure upon the rehabili-
tation of the conscience of man-
kind. We believe that this con-
science is rooted in a large meas-
ure in the moral and spiritual
traditions and challenges of
Christianity and Judaism.
We call upon the members of the
American Jewish Community to
strengthen their commitments to
the synagogue and the agencies
of Jewish culture in an effort to
revive the broken spirits of our
stricken brethren in Europe, to
compensate for the destruction of
their organized religious life, as
well as to remain true to our his-
torical heritage as a people. We
call upon the members of the
Christian communions in the
United States to employ the im-
measurable power of their faith
to restore the presence of God in
a world that has almost been de-
stroyed by the agencies of evil.
As Jews we believe "that except
the Lord build the house, they
labor in vain that build it."

The Week's Best Stories

Surprise Attack
The news reached the wife of
a Jew in modest circumstances
that her husband had won $30,-
000 in a lottery. There was the
problem of breaking the news
to the happy man who suffered
from a weak heart. So the fam-
ily doctor was invited to dinner
that night to "deliver" the news
in an appropriate manner.
"What would you do," asked the
doctor jocularly, "if you sudden-
ly heard that you had won $30,-
000?"
"Please don't ask silly ques-
tions," was the reply, as the host
proceeded to speak of the war.
Later in the evening the doc-
tor repeated his question, again
in jocular vein. Rather irritably
and shortly his host replied: "If
I ever won $30,000 I would give
you half."
And then to the surprise of
everyone, the doctor passed out.

Hitler's Own Hell
Adolf Hitler died and went
"below." Satan answered his
knock, told him to wait a min-
ute, went away, and returned
with a box of matches and a
bundle of fire-wood. "Listen,
Adolf, there's a limit to what
even we can stand. Take these
and start a hell of your own."
