Saved by Americans

(Continued on Page 5)

A group of 150 persons, mostly
Jewish refugees who were await-
ing transport to the U. S. and
trapped in Italy when that coun-
try was at war with us, shown
with RABBI SALOMAN
SCHAECHTER in the synagogue
which they built after American
and Allied forces entered Cam-
pagna, Italy.

The refugees were thrown into
a concentration camp almost
three years ago and when Italy
collapsed and the Nazis captured
the town, the internees escaped
to the mountains Where they
lived on grapes and figs for 12
days. They returned to Cam-
pagna on Sept. 19 when the U. S.
army arrived to liberate them.

Among the refugees were doc-
tors who aided the injured vic-
