organizations to contribute lib-
erally to the War Chest has been
issued by Dr. Abba Hillel Silver,
national co-chairman of the
United Jewish Appeal and na-
tional chairman of the United
Palestine Appeal. In a message
addressed to the local organiza-
tions, Dr. Silver states:
Full Confidence
"I understand that your or-
ganization will shortly take
Under consideration its pledge
to the current drive of the War
Chest of Metropolitan Detroit.
I am aware of the fine sense
of community responsibility
which was demonstrated by
your membership last year . and
I have full confidence that you
will respond with even greater
generosity this year in keeping
with the greatly increased needs
resulting from the rapidly
changing world situation.
"The agencies of the United
Jewish Appeal, which look to the
War Chest in Detroit for in-
creased support, are confronted
with extraordinary wartime
emergencies for which provision
must be made, while established
programs of overseas relief, as-

sistance to Palestine and help
and guidance for the refugees in
our own country are continued
without abatement.
"You have undoubtedly read
of the escape of thousands of
Jewish men and women and
children from Denmark to Swed-
en after the institution of harsh
decrees by the Nazi forces now
occupying the former country.
The Joint Distribution Commit-
tee, which is working in close
cooperation with the Welfare
Committee in Sweden, has dis-
patched an initial emergency
grant of $25,000 for the relief
of the refugees there and it is
expected that as the situation
clarifies, larger sums will be
needed without delay. Funds are
also required for expanding op-
erations on behalf of Jews in the
newly liberated areas of North
Africa and Italy.
Counting Upon Us
• "Moreover, the courageous
Jewish community of Palestine
is counting upon us, through the
United Palestine Appeal, to con-
tinue our support of their criti-
cal war effort which is contrib-
uting so effectively to the victory
of the democratic forces. We
must also make it possible for
thousands of Jewish children,
for whom permission to enter
Palestine has been granted by
the British Government, to find
new lives in Palestine. The num-
ber who can be saved will be
dependent, in large measure, up-
on the funds we are able to
make available for their trans-
portation and settlement.
Coughlin Speeches
Sent to Nazi Spy
Fritz Kunze, former German-
American Bund leader, now
serving a prison term for espion-
age, was such a devotee of Fa-
ther Coughlin's speeches that he
had them mailed to him when
he made his trips to report his
observations to his superiors in
the "fatherland." -
This was revealed by Fritz B.
Ebert, during his testimony in
the Federal Court - here, where
he is one of the defendants in
denaturalization pr o c e e di ngs.
Ebert sent the copies of the
speeches to Kunze and other
Bund leaders in Germany.
