Detroit in the Limelight

Our community is being scrutinized by columnists and
news services for evidence of racial bigotry and anti-Semi-
tism, as a result of the unhappy experiences we had here
in June.
Headquarters of Father Charles E. Coughlin and Rev.
Gerald L. K. Smith, and the center of attention when the
Dearborn Independent revived the scurrilous Protocols of
the Elders of Zion, Detroit remains in the limelight and is
watched for new and sensational outbursts throughout the
land.
Last week, the Jewish Telegraphic Agency's columnist
and the Independent Jewish Press Service reported that in
the October 5 Primaries in Detroit, 52,500 votes, of the total
of 199,000 cast here, were recorded for candidates backing
the various anti-Semitic, anti-Negro and KKK nominees.
* * *
Pointing out that this represented one-fourth of the total
vote cast, the JPS report states: "Karl H. Smith, one of the
acolytes of Gerald K. Smith, received 18,467 votes, the highest
polled by any of the candidates of the 'lunatic fringe.' Ed-
ward Carey, seeking the mayoralty nomination on a straight
anti-Semitic platform, polled 984 votes. Virgil Chandler,
under indictment for inciting a race riot, got 5,504 votes.
Stanley Kotyla, seeking nomination on an anti-Negro plat-
form received 9,700 votes."
Quoting the headline over this report, "Bigots Poll One-
Quarter of Detroit Primary Vote," a JPS columnist wise-
cracks as follows: "A little more and more and they can
change the name permanently to DetRIOT."
• At the same time also, the American Civil Liberties
Union includes Detroit among 23 cities where "danger of
race riots exists," and where preventive measures must be
taken immediately to avert trouble.
* * *
What are the facts in the case? Is it true that Detroit
is a keg of powder which may be blown up any minute by
the growing number of bigots in our midst?
The truth is that the figures quoted by the Jewish press
services are gross exaggerations. There was only one anti-
Semitic candidate in the field — Edward Carey — and as
indicated he received only 984 votes.
It was not until after the Primaries that we learned
that another of the candidates referred to, Karl H. Smith,
was present at two of the Gerald L. K. Smith meetings. But
this candidate for the Council had also made a bid for votes
of Jewish citizens, and it is possible that he is just another
politician who will utilize every opportunity that presents
itself to secure votes when he is in • the race for an office.
There ought to be nothing frightening, therefore, in the fact
that he received 18,467 votes. The only thing to remember is
Karl H. Smith's own emphasis, in his campaign publicity,
to his being president of the Greater Detroit Property Own-
ers' and Taxpayers' Association.
True, there were several candidates who are avowedly
anti-Negro. But despite prevailing prejudices even they had
polled comparatively few votes.
The spread of bigotry is in itself a serious enough
matter, without necessitating exaggerations. The notoriety
now being given Detroit as a powder-keg of bigotry and
racial and b religious hatred is based on exaggerated reports.

The

Metropolitan War Chest

By DR. B. BENEDICT GLAZER

The citizens. of the City of Detroit once again face the
inescapable challenge of their social responsibilities in these
times. The demands of the Metropolitan War Chest help
crystalize our duties and obligations as men and women on
the home front during the greatest and most devastating war
in human history. No one in good conscience
can permit himself in this hour to do less than
make his maximum contribution to the War
Chest. Whatever we contribute can only in a
small measure represent a thank-offering unto
God for the blessings and privileges which we
enjoy in security and freedom in this blessed
land.

As Jews we should be inevitably more
sensitive to the call to render relief and sus-
tenance to the broken and bleeding victims

of war. The incredible sufferings of our
brethren in Europe must stimulate every humane fibre of our
beings and prompt us to give freely to all causes that sustain
morale on the home front and which help to mitigate the dis-
tress and chaos of war beyond our shores.

When we have given generously, we shall find ourselves
ready and eager to win others to the joys of willing-hearted
service. The Metropolitan War Chest Campaign is a blessing
which helps us to live up to our full status as citizens of the
United States and children of a merciful God.

The Fight Against the White Paper

Balfour Day—Nov. 2—will be utilized throughout the
country to inaugurate the campaign against the British White
Paper, which would put an end to Jewish immigration into
Palestine.
The Detroit Jewish community will join in this campaign,
and all possible encouragement should be given to the Zion-
ists of our city in fighting against the imposition of restric-
tions which would shut the only avenue of escape now open
for persecuted Jews in Nazi-held territories.

The fight against the White Paper is in no sense a fight
against Great Britain. It is a battle against certain elements
in the British administration in Palestine and in the British
Colonial Office who are motivated by a policy of appease-
ment toward the Arabs and of some hatred toward the Jews.

This must be emphasized: all American Jews are united
in opposition to the White Paper. Even the few who had
opposed the resolution for a Jewish Commonwealth at the
American Jewish Conference declared emphatically that they
are ready to fight against the implementation of the White
Paper.

Therefore, this fight must be carried on in a spirit of
unity, and it is certain that all of our people, regardless of
affiliation, will lend their voices to the protest against the
iniquitous restrictions planned by deluded British colonial
officials.

One day while Rabbi Judah,
Rabbi Joseh, Rabbi Simon and
Judah ben Gerim were talking
among themselves Rabbi Judah
spoke in a very complimentary
manner of the Romans.
"They have not only beauti-
fied our cities," he said, "but they
have done much for the conveni-
ence and comfort of the people
by building fine broad streets,
bridges, bathhouses and other
improvements. They really are
to be complimented."
"I disagree with you," said
Rabbi Simon, "everything they
have done has a selfish motive
behind it. All who use the
bridges are taxed. The bath-
houses are for their own com-
fort, so it is not magnanimity
but selfishness on their part that
they have done all these things
for which you praise them."
This conversation being re-
peated to friends by Judah ben
Gerim, it eventually reached the
ear of the Roman emperor. He
was much pleased with the at-
titude of Judah and rewarded
him by conferring a high honor
upon him. However, Joseh, who
had remained silent, he banish-
ed to Zipore; and Simon, who
had criticized the motives and
acts of the emporer, he put to
death.
Says the Talmud:
"Sometimes words wound
more than swords."
"The loquacity of fools is a
lecture to the wise."
"Confine your tongue, lest it
confine you."

CHILDREN'S
CORNER

Dear Boys and Girls:
This is the time when all—
young and old—must think of
their less fortunate fellow men
who are suffering terrible tor-
tures in Europe.
We must, of course, think of
these people always. But at a
time when we are engaged in a
great campaign to raise funds to
assist them and to provide them
with means of sustenance, we
must dedicate ourselves com-
pletely to the relief drive.
Jews have always taken care
of their oppressed kinsmen. We
must exert ourselves at this time
to help them more than ever.
Do you know the meaning of
the Hebrew word Zedakah,
which is interpreted as Charity?
It means Justice. To help the less
fortunate is an act of justice. To
do justice is our responsibility at
all times.

A pleasant Sabbath to you all.
