Friday, October 29, 1943 THE JEWISH NEWS Page Seventeen Anti-Semitic Investigation Launched in Massachusetts Governor Salfonsfall Orders State-wide Probe After Expose of Hooliganism in Dorchester Area of Boston; Terrorism Assailed by Newspapers BOSTON (JPS)—Acting promptly upon a newspaper ex- pose of Christian Front hooliganism directed at Jews in the Dorchester area of Boston, Governor Leverett Saltonstall of Massachusetts ordered a state-wide probe of anti-Semitic. ter- rorism. The investigation was begun immediately after the Governor, in response to an inquiry, outlined to the Inde- pendent Jewish Press Service his plan to bring to light the true facts regarding anti-Semitic ac- tivity and to take the necessary steps to ameliorate the situation. In his statement to the Inde- pendent Jewish Press Service, the Governor called attention to the fact that "my whole life and my public record, I trust, has been devoted to insistence on lib- erality and tolerance of racial, religious and color minorities. It is neither my character nor my desire to tolerate any bigotry in Boston and Massachusetts." Picks Committee One of the Governor's first steps was to appoint a com- mittee of five prominent Bos- ton residents, representing the Jewish, Protestant and Catho- lic faiths, to devise means of checking the anti-Semitic men- ace. The committee includes Rabbi Joshua L. Liebman, Judge Harold P. Williams, Judge Abraham L. Punanski of the Superior Court, Judge Jacob J. Kaplan, retired, and Rev. Robert P. Barry, pastor of the St. Clements Roman Cath- olic Church. In an obvious rebuff to Boston police officials who allegedly were content with a routine in- vestigation despite the growing proportions of the anti-Semitic hooliganism in the metropolitan area, Gov. Saltonstall ordered Acting Public Safety Commis- sioner John F. Stokes "to make available all the facilities of the Massachusetts state police" for a thorough investigation. In the absence of the State Attorney General, the Governor conferred with Assistant Attorney General Volpe, outlining the action he expected from that branch of the state machinery. The Governor's prompt action has the support of all liberal newspapers in the city. Press Backs Investigation The Christian Science Monitor, credited with having been the first Boston paper to bring to light acts of anti-Semitic vio- lence, wrote editorially: "The people of Boston will not be slow to act to stop these un- American outrages. They will give vigorous support to the Governor's steps to investigate the evidences of racism and to root them out." The Boston Daily Globe edi- torial stated: "Boston is in no temper to stand an outbreak of racial or religious intolerance. "The time to crush hoodlum- ism, with such an un-American spirit behind it, is the minute it starts. Police and all other pub- lic officials will be false to their duty if they trifle with this issue. They must crack down hard, and now." Spur Investigation Meanwhile liberal and labor leaders here issued statements Return of Medal to Finns Ordered in Poet's Will JERUSALEM, (JTA)—The me- dal awarded by the Finnish Government to the late Dr. Saul Tschernickowsky, noted- Hebrew poet who died this week, for his translation of the Finnish epic poem Kalevala will be returned to that government under the terms of Dr. Tschernichowsky's will. The Author's Association this week discussed the establish- ment of a memorial to the famed poet where various documents, personal belongings and other mementoes of Dr. Tschernichow- sky would be on permanent ex- hibit. tva 31 ■ 1•1•4144 Vtilizvv 1 4 which spurred on the investiga- tion. Dr. Albert Sprague Coolidge, chairman of the Massachusetts Civil Liberties Union, declared: "Two issues are involved in the reports of the Dorchester af- fair. One is the largest question of anti-Semitism, which must be dealt with constructively and at once by the entire community; the other is the question of al- leged brutality inflicted upon the Jewish boys by the police. Law- lessness on the part of those whose duty it is to enforce the law makes a mockery of justice and shocks every decent Ameri- can citizen." Blame Ostrich Policy Joseph Salerno, president of the Massachusetts State CIO, de- manded a legislative investiga- tion of the anti - Semitic out- breaks. In some circles it was charged that the "ostrich policy" of some Jewish leaders was to blame for the growth of anti-Semitic im- pudence. The so-called "best Jews" were apprised of condi- tions but had decided to "hush up" matters in order not to ag- gravate the situation, it was said. USED THE SAME TACTICS TO GET STARTED IN EUROPE The Nazis got info power about ten years ago because Mr. and Mrs. Average Citizen of Germany were content to SIT BACK AND WATCH developments, in- stead of taking an active interest and an active part in elections. Today in Detroit through the selfish demands of some greedy, power-seeking officials, an attempt is being made by well-organized "pressure gang" tactics to break up ocip NON-PARTISAN form of These political leaders and labor barons aren't content with a representative voice in city affairs, they want their voice to be the ONLY ONE theydon't want a man like Jeffries as Mayor because he is a man who refuses to do anything contrary to the best interests of Detroit. Because Jeffries is the kind of a public-spirited official who won't let them twist him around their little finger—they want a man in office whom they can control, a man who must do as they say "or else" . . . that's the first step toward a Nazi form of government. Is that what you want in your home town? Is that the type of city you want to live in and raise your children in?
