WASHINGTON (JTA)—Dr. Abba Hillel Silver, . chairman of
the American Zionist Emergency Council, this week called upon
Her.-Ak de Kauffmann, Danish Minister-in-Exile, and expressed the

way in which the people of Denmark and the King have reacted to
the Nazi brutalities against the Jews of Denmark." The Minister

that one afternoon its staff was
listening to a news broadcast
when the name of Heinrich
Himmler issued from the loud-
speaker. Simultaneously a worm
crawled out of the radio's in-

Like King Midas, Eddie Can-
tor has the touch of gold. Every
song he "discovers leaps into the
best-seller class. It began in 1922
when a song salesman named
Harry Akst showed Cantor some
new songs from his publishing
house. "No," said Cantor, "I
don't like them. Haven't you any-
thing else?" Sheepishly the sales-
man brought forth a piece of
paper. "I've got one I wrote my-
self." He played it! That's the
one I want," exploded Eddie. The
song was "Dinah" which became
a No 1 hit . . . "Yes, We Have No
Bananas" was dug up by Cantor
one day when he was idly
thumbing his way through a pile
of unpublished manuscripts.
It became such a hit that Victor
couldn't record any other tune
for weeks. "Yes, My Darling
Daughter" came to his front door
in a half-baked manuscript state.
It put Dinah Shore on the map
and did very well for itself. Oth-
er songs that rocketed after Can-
tor introduced them on the air

Says Trial Uncovered
Vast Arms Smuggling
LONDON, (JTA)—War Minis-
ter Sir James Grigg, speaking in
Commons this week, charged
that the arms smuggling alleg-
edly uncovered in the trials of
several Jews recently concluded
in Jerusalem, was on a much
larger scale than has been usual
in Palestine.
Replying to a query by Rear-
Admiral T.P.H. Beamish, Con-
servative from Sussex, Sir James
said that "trafficking in arms in
Palestine has, unfortunately, al-
ways been rife in both commun-
ities, but cases of arms smug-
gling on such a scale have been
rare."

on a Wing and a Prayer," "In My
Arms." In his long career he has
hatched so many unheard tune
chicks he can't remember them.

The record speaks for itself. Mayor Jeff-
ries has served the people of Detroit with one

of the most honest and capable administra-
tions this city has ever known. He has kicked

out graft and power politics ... he has treated

all groups fairly with the best interests of the
city at heart.

Now, Mayor Jeffries is fighting an organ-
ized political machine controlled by certain
_ selfish leaders who are doing ever y-
thing in their power to defeat fair dealing
government. These leaders want SPECIAL
FAVORS which they cannot get from Jeffries
. . . they seek to take away control of city
government from the people.

We know that under Mayor Jeffries we
have always received a square deal . . . that's
all any group has a right to ask for, and Mayor
Jeffries will always defend that right!

The Jewish Community of Detroit should
have a special interest against Block Voting
(organized political voting). The late Louis
Marshall, one of the greatest leaders in the
history of American Jewry, had set the prece-
dent for proper and patriotic action by
Americans when he condemned BLOCK VOT-
ING by any group and called for selection of
candidates on merit and not from the view-
point of 'special privileges.

Your vote for Mayor Jeffries guarantees
the perpetuation of equal opportunities for
all races and all faiths ... you have his record
for the past twelve years to prove that!

personally know Mayor Jeffries and believe he
should be re-elected.
