WATCH ON CAIRO

The discussions which are now taking
place in Cairo on the question of the
establishment of a Pan-Arab Federation
are being closely watched by five inter-
ested parties . . . These are: Britain, the
United States, Soviet Russia, Turkey and
the Jews . . . Each of these five has a
different attitude towards the formation
of a Pan-Arab Federation which is to
include Palestine . . . The British For-
eign office is not only anxious to see
such a Federation formed, but is doing
its utmost to see it established in order
to have it function . under British in-
fluence . . . The United States is sim-
ilarly not adverse to the Pan-Arab Fed-
eration idea, because of the new inter-
ests which America is now acquiring in
Arabia . . . In fact, the talks in Cairo
are not without American approval . . .
Soviet Russia is looking with suspicion
towards the possible formation of the
projected Pan-Arab Federation, because
the Arabs have, in this war, proven
themselves pro-Nazi and pro-Fascist un-
til they realized that Hitler no longer
had any chance for victory . . . Turkey
is definitely opposed to the Pan-Arab
Federation idea, because she does not
want merged Arab forces as her neig-
bor • .. The attitude of the Jews is that
Palestine must first be proclaimed a
Jewish Commonwealth, then there will
be no Jewish opposition to its entering
the projected Pan-Arab Federation un-
der certain conditions.
With Palestine being the back door to
Soviet Russia in the present war and in
any other war that may come, it is no
wonder that Ivan Maisky, the Soviet
vice-commissar for Foreign Affairs, has
gone out of his way to visit the Jewish.
settlements there and to confer with Ben
Gurion and other Jewish leaders . .
Ordinarily, these Jewish leaders were on
the black list in Moscow, and it is ques-
tionable whether they would get a Soviet
visa even today . . What tomorrow
may bring is, however, a different story
. . . All indications point to the fact that
Russia may be inclined to exercise great
influence in favor of a Jewish Palestine
during the forthcoming peace discus-
sions.

LONDON AND WASHINGTON

Dr. Chaim Weizmann is now a very
disappointed man . . . He has been at-
tempting to see Churchill ever since his
return from the United States, and has
so far not succeeded . . . Disappointed
also are the several hundred rabbis who,
misguided by certain elements, proceed-
ed to Washington to petition Roosevelt
on the Jews in Europe, but were com-
pletely ignored by the President, who
preferred not to see them . .. This will,
perhaps, serve as a lesson to others who
think that the Jews of Europe can be
saved by mere publicity tricks.
The best ,joke about Dr. Weizmann I
ever heard was one that he himself told
. . He was asked before the war why
he did not come to Palestine as often as
many would like him to . . . He smiling-
ly explained . . . "You see," he said
"when I leave for Palestine there is us-
ually an item in the press reading: 'Prof.
Chaim Weizmann left for ,Palestine' . .
On the ship I overhear Jewish passen-
gers talking among themselves: 'Here is
Dr. Weizmann' . . . I am no longer 'Prof.
Weizmann,' but 'Dr. Weizmann' . . .
When I land in Palestine there is usually
a Zionist delegation greeting me: 'Hello,
Weizmann!' . . Now I am no longer
`professor' and not even 'doctor' . . . As
I go from the pier into a taxi, the taxi
driver slaps me intimately on the back
with a greeting: , 'Shalom, Chaim!' . . .
There is no more 'professor,' or 'doctor,'
or even Weizmann,' but just 'Chaim' .
Can you blame me for not being such
a frequent visitor to Palestine as sonic
would like me to be?" . . . Nevertheless,
don't be surprised to read that Dr. Weiz-
mann will soon proceed to Palestine . .

Dr. Weizmann 's
70th Birthday

Your Commentator was misled by the
Jewish National Fund Calendar into be-
lieving that Dr. Chaim Weizmann'S 70th
birthday will occur in November of this
year. We are indebted to Meyer W.
Weisgal for the information that Dr.
Weizmann will not reach the age of 70
until Nov. 27, 1944. We are pleased. to
make the correction=--our only regret
being that we can't push the 70th birth-
day ahead another ten years in order to
lend the great Jewish leader additional
years for service to Our people.

A New Definition of Sacrifice

By IRVING W. BLUMBERG

Co Chairman, Industrial Division, War Chest of Metropolitan Detroit

-

At campaign time many of us indulge in glib talk about sacrifice.
I am afraid that most of us do not pause long enough to contemplate
the full meaning of that word. A new definition of sacrifice has been
written in, blood by the martyrs of the Warsaw ghetto. The Jews of
Warsaw courageously resisted Nazi troops who were sent to extermi-
nate them. From behind hastily erected barricades they fought against
Nazi tanks and airplanes, killino many Germans. They lost the battle
b
for their own lives but they helped
win the war for freedom, for they
engaged Nazi forces and material which Hitler might otherwise have
used against our allies.
The 4,000,000 Jews in Nazi Europe who are threatened with total
annihilation look to us to help them survive until the day of victory
comes. We have an opportunity to match, in some small measure, the
sacrifice of the Jews of Warsaw by establishing new standards of giv-
ing to the campaign of the War Chest of Metropolitan Detroit. Through
this one great unified effort we can contribute the funds which the
Allied Jewish Campaign must make available to the United Jewish
Appeal to rescue many hundreds of thousands of Jews from destruc-
tion.
With the funds it receives from the United Jewish Appeal the Joint
Distribution Committee is today carrying on a far-flung relief and re-
habilitation program, extending many forms of aid to 900,000 Jews in
various parts of the world. To back up the JDC we must back up the
War Chest to the limit of our resources.

Major Horace E. Dodge, Jr., the motor

tion on the grounds that he is pro-Nazi,
is, according to his own boasts, a finan-
cial contributor to Gerald K. Smith, the
notorious pro-Fascist and anti-Semite.
Attention, Department of Justice: Dr.
Enrique Cervantes, whom Alan Chase,
author of "Falange," has branded as a
Falangist, is an avowed anti-Semite . .
Right now he's trying to get into the
American Army by way of avoiding de-
portation . . . Incidentally, despite rave
reviews and Walter Winchell's boosting
of the book, the publishers have decided
not to push "Falange" . . . High pressure
from clerical and Fascist quarters is the
reason, we're told . . • Despite . this, many
people have been saying that Chase
ought to get a medal for having written
his expose . . . So now he has one—a
decoration bestowed upon .him by the
Republic of Cuba.

The International Red Cross is ex-

who are particularly persistent in forc-
ing their attentions on unwilling ladies,
she usually grows confidential and
whispers in the invader's ear: "I have

Nazi quickly looks around to see whether
any one has observed him speaking to

a "non-Aryan," and hastily departs .

BANNED

Among the papers banned by the

Ramirez government in Argentina is La

Idea Sionista. The hypocritical excuse
that the administration is trying to pre-
vent controversial discussion of Argen-
tinian problems . doesn't even apply to
that paper which • is exclusively devoted
to Zionism. An eight-page standard-
sized paper, La Idea Sionista is publish-
ed in Spanish. So there isn't even the
charge against it that it's in Yiddish and
gives difficulties to the censors to pass
on the artcles.
The particular sheet happens to be
the only standard-sized paper in the
western hemisphere devoted to the Ja-
botinsky • cult. It follows the Zionist-
Revisionist line and • its masthead car-
ries the sub-title in Spanish: "A Jewish
State, with a Jewish majority, on both
sides of the Jordan." The old writings of
Vladimir Jabotinsky are dug up and the
views of his son, Eri, are plastered all
over the paper. But to Ramirez all Jews
are alike. And to whom aren't,. they?

Purely
Commentary

By PHILIP-SLCMOVITZ

A STAB IN THE BACK

One of the most difficult things to ex-
plain is the indifference of Jews who
permit newspapers serving their needs
to publish some of the trash with which
an apparently unsuspecting public is
being fed.
A "columnist" who has taken a de-
cidedly anti-Zionist stand recently saw
fit to relate a story about an Arab who
—contrary to Islamic law—joined him
in imbibing cocktails. In the course of
their conversation this Arab flattered
him by calling him "cousin" and told
him a story which has been misleading
non-Jews but should. not have been per-
mitted to mislead Jews.
This Arab—if we are to believe the
story—played a saintly role by stating
that Jews who had left their Palestinian
home will be welcomed back by their
Arab cousins, but they will not be per-
mitted to take that home away from the
Arabs. If they do, then the Arabs will
cut the Jews' throats.
And to this, the "columnist" saw fit
to drink another forbidden cocktail with
his Arab "cousin."
This is the type of story that not only
insults the intelligence of Jews but
pushes the Arab knife deeper into the
Jew's throat.

* *

IT'S A LIE

It should be stated as emphatically as
possible that the Arab claim, to which
a "columnist" calling himself a Jewish
commentator gives credence, is an ab-
solute lie.
Jews have not and will not go to Pal-
estine to take away anyone's home.
Whenever Jews acquired land in Pal-
- estine which was previously occupied
by Arabs, provisions were made, always,
to find other homes for the Arabs and
to compensate them for the change they
were making. Invariably, the changes
- benefitted rather than harmed the Arabs.
Why are lies being spread by Jews?
Why do Jewish periodicals publish
such trash?
Better ask: why do the Jewish readers
who are fed on such trash permit news-
papers reaching their homes to get away
with such insults which become wea-
pons against us in the hands of our
enemies.

* * *
THE THROAT-CUTTING THREAT

That throat-cutting threat must not be
permitted to pass unchallenged.
If the Arab "cousin" who issued that
warning under the influence of a cocktail
(did our Jewish "columnist" also pay
for the drinks?) meant to infer that
Jews who will go to Palestine humbly,
merely to study in the Yeshivoth of
Jerusalem and Hebron and Safed and
Tiberias, will not be touched by the
knife aimed at our throats, then we must
ask again whether the Hebron outrage
of 1929 was an exception to the rule.
The innocent and defenseless Yeshivah
students who were murdered • in cold
blood in Hebron in 1929 had no political
designs on the Arab "cousin's" home or
cocktails. But they were brutally murd-
ered -under most disgusting circum-
stances. -
Jews, all of us, invite and welcome
the cooperation of our Arab cousins. We
aspire only to the friendliest relation-
ships with them.
But when an Arab threatens to cut
our throats, we must look reproachfully
to our own brother who gives credence
to such horrible incitement to riot and
we must say to him and to his Arab
"cousin":

Remember Hebron!

Education of a Nazi

Emma Gelders Sterne has written a
novel which describes the activities of
saboteurs in this country and at the
same time depicts the tragedy of an
American-born Nazi-trained youngster
who finds it difficult to become adjusted
to the American scene after returning to
this country. '•-
"Incident in Yorkville Among Spies
and Saboteurs" . (Farrar & Rinehart) is
the story of a young boy whose father
sent him to Germany for. training. When
the war broke out he came to Yorkville
and fell under the tutelage of a Bund
leader and his uncle, a -Nazi agent.
The _spies are caught, but until the
final showdown the youngster praises
the glories of Nazism. His playmates
finally :give him a dose of his own medi-
cine. The result is that he reforms,
recognizes the evils of Hitlerism and
settles down in appreciation - of the free-
dom- offered him by .his _native land.
