Sparks of freedom are flying in Sweden and Denmark, where not only the Swedes and the Danes are assisting Jews in their escape from the clutches of the Gestapo, but where even German soldiers are expressing sympathy with those threatened by the - cruel Hitlerites. Even in Nazi-controlled Finland, the fate of the Danish Jews has found sympathy and the Finns have condemned German tyranny. Thus, the bravery of the Dutch and the Belgians, who have resisted Nazism since their countries have been ravaged by the Nazis, is being paralleled in the Scandinavian countries. The heroism of these freedom-loving peoples will be recorded indelibly in the history of the world as evidence that tyranny can not rule forever. `Justice' in Palestine Because he possessed two bullets—one serviceable—Eli- hau Sacharov, one-time bodyguard of Dr. Chaim Weizmann, was given a seven-year jail sentence by a Palestine court. This is another example of British "justice" in Palestine. Coupled with the earlier conviction of two Jews, this act provides additional reason for condemnation of an appar- ently well-planned campaign by anti-Zionist British officials in Palestine to discredit the Jewish people on the eve of the proposed enforcement of the White Paper. At the meeting of the Assephat Hanivcharim in Jerusa- lem, at which a resolution condemning the convictions was adopted by the spokesmen for the Jewish communities in the National Home, David Ben Gurion made the following important points: The entire Jewish people was convicted, not merely the defendants in the "gun-running" trial; Jewish soldiers who fought in Greece, Libya and the Western desert were ma- ligned as being "a canker in the British army;" the trial was an attempt to produce hatred against the Jews among the British; the entire trial was comparable to the libels con- tained in the notorious Protocols of the Elders of Zion. Mr. Ben Gurion correctly pointed out that the existence of a defense corps of Jews in Palestine was a matter of self- respect and not something to be ashamed of. These are facts to be taken into consideration by the fair-minded British people. The attitude of colonial officials in Palestine must be corrected if Arab-Jewish trouble is to be averted and British-Jewish friendship cemented rather than torn asunder. Talmudic Tales Against the Black Market The cooperation of Detroit's kosher butchers in the en- forcement of the OPA rules is a step in the right direction that should lead toward the elimination of possible abuses of established war measures. This step, taken by the Jewish Community Council, must be recognized as only the beginning of a movement to avoid the rise of a "black market." More important than the pledges of the kosher butchers is the need for determined action by the housewives to refuse to pay higher prices and to insist upon strict adher- ence to "ceiling" prices established by law. The next step to be taken by the Council should be to educate the public to help enforce OPA standards. One of the sessions of the Oct. 24 Institute being ar- ranged by the Council provides for the elevation of the dignity and tone of individual and group life in the Jewish community. The movement to prevent the rise of a "black market" should be considered one of the major obligations in the acquisition of such dignity. When Alexander the Great was denied admittance to Para- dise, he said to the keeper of the gates: "Since you refuse to admit me, give me something to show that I have at least come this far." "Since you insist," replied the keeper of the gates, "take this and be gone." When Alexander saw that what the keeper had given him was a part of a human skull, he threw it from him angrily. A sage, who was passing and saw him do this, said, "Despise not this present although it may appear insignificant to you. It , possesses unusual qualities which will be apparent to you if you but weigh it with gold or silver." Alexander ordered a scale brought and found that the skull outweighed the gold and silver. "This is unbelievable," he cried. "How do you account for the fact that such a small piece of matter should outweigh so much gold and silver?" The wise man then covered the bone with a small portion of earth and immediately the posi- tion of the scale changed, the gold now far overbalancing the , skull. "Your majesty," replied the sage, "that is the part of the skull which surrounds the man eye, the eye which nothing can satis- fy. The more it sees, the more it wants. The more it possesses, the more it desires. Such is the eye of man which nothing can satis- fy but the earth 'which covers it in the grave." Properly implemented by adherents to all faiths, this interfaith statement can and should be made the basis for cooperation that must lead to the creation of a world order devoid of fear and replete with security for all liberty- loving peoples. May this declaration prove its worth speedily, in the spirit of America and the peoples who adhere to the three faiths which inspired it. =5-E, s s " - Mass Petition Movement Started to Rescue Jews NEW YORK (JPS)—Launch- ing of a nationwide campaign for 10,000,000 signatures to a pe- tition demanding immediate aid for the Jewish victims of Nazi persecution was announced in a full-page advertisement inserted in the New York Times by the Emergency Committee to Save the Jewish People of Europe.
