The Liberated Become Liberators By ABRAHAM COOPER Presidents Zionist Organization of Detroit Refugees Use Their Skills In War Work The art of diamond cutting and polish- ing, important to the .war industry, is being introduced in the Western Hemisphere with the aid of the "Rescue for Vic- tory" campaign of the. United Jewish Appeal for - Refu- gees, Overseas Needs and Pales- tine. The Allied Jewish Campaign, one of the major beneficiaries of the War Chest, pro- vides Detroit Jer- ry's contributions to this cause. The newspaper headlines almost daily give an account of the triumphant exploits of the British 8th Army. I wonder how many of us realize that Jewish soldiers from Palestine have had an outstanding role in the success of this army's offensive action. It was the Jewish soldiers who cleared the minefields in Montgomery's sensational dash from El Alamein to Tunis. It was the Jewish sol- diers who followed Montgomery to Sicily and who fought bravely to drive the Nazis out of Italy. More than 50,000 Jewish men and women are today enrolled in the Bri- tish Army and the Palestine Home Guard. With the help that we have given to Mr. Cooper the program for the upbuilding and defense of the Jewish Homeland in Palestine, the victims of Hitlerism have been dramatically converted into heroic liberators. In the months to come Palestine will occupy a strategic position in the Allied plans to destroy Hitler's "Fortress Europe." We can help the Jews of Palestine make their maximum contribution to democratic victory through the United Jew- ish Appeal, which is the major beneficiary of the Allied Jewish Campaign. If the United Palestine Appeal, which is the instrument for the reconstruction of Palestine, is to receive adequate funds for its program in the coming year, the entire Jewish community of Detroit must respond on a new level of generosity to the War Chest of Metropolitan Detroit.
