Servicemen Guests of Kahn, Keywell and Kowal

Rosh Hashanah-1943 will be
long remembered by Kopel Kahn,
Henry C. Keywell and Isidore
Kowal, co-owners of the Barium
Hotel, as well as some 250 Jew-
ish service men.
During the two days of Rosh
Hashanah Kahn, Keywell and
Kowal opened the doors of their
hotel to the service men. Not
only were they given free lodg-
ing during their stay in Detroit
but they were also given free
holiday meals, and provided with
transportation to and from syna-
gogues.
Arrangements to take care of
the service men, most of them

stationed at Fort Custer, were
made by Keywell with the local
Jewish Welfare Board.
Keywell's inspiration for the
generous hospitality enjoyed by
the men was his son Jerome, who
is stationed at the Army Air
Force Radio School in Sioux
Falls, S. D.
An additional hundred service
men were placed in homes where
they were fed, housed and taken
to synagogues. All arrangements
were made through the- Jewish
Welfare Board. The same proce-
dure was followed for Yom Kip-
pur.

STOCKHOLM, (JTA)—Strong
support for the Swedish govern-
ment's offer to receive all 7,000
Jews in Denmark is voiced today
in every StOckholm newspaper,
reflecting the public's sympathy
for the Danish Jews who face
deportation and death. Whether
the Nazi government will accept
the Swedish offei and what
measures Sweden is prepared to
take if her offer is rejected are
not known:
An official -Swedish broadcast
this week stated that three Ger-
man ships are ,,lying in Copen-
hagen roadsteads, and are pre-
sumably_ intended : for use as
transports to carry the Jews to
Germany, from where they prob-
ably would be shipPed to Poland.
Danish circles here have been
informed that the • arrests of Co-
penhagen JeWS began during the
Rosh Hashanah services; . with
Gestapo squads roaming the
streets and invading synagogues.
Only a few hundred. Danish
Jews have succeeded in reaching
Sweden since the Germans_ pro-
claimed state of emergency in
Denmark last month. Many
others are reported to be at-,
tempting to escape in small row-
boats, although Nazi patrol ves-
sels have established. a virtual
blockade around Denmark. Sev-
eral small boats carrying JeWish
families are reported to have
been sunk.
In the last week 2,000 Gestapo
agents and 600 S.S. men have
arrived in Denmark to complete
the round-up of the Jews and to
quell internal - disturbances, ac-
cording to another report reach-
ing here. This report states that
the Gestapo is being assisted by
the Danish quisling "Frikorps."
