PHILIP SLOMOVITZ, Editor OCTOBER 8, 1943 As the Editor Views the News - - The Day of Atonement As we gather in our Synagogues this Friday evening in solemn prayer, the Day of Atonement assumes greater im- portance than at any other time in the history of our people. This Day of Judgment is also a day of inner searching of our hearts and minds. On this day we will review the mistakes of the past and will resolve to avoid them in the future. We pray for forgiveness for the errors of judgment and our failures to act in time of stress. We resolve that we shall not fail our fellow-men in the future. The Jews of America have, in the main, rendered great service to the cause of democracy and in the fulfillment of our obligations to the millions of unfortunates in Nazi-ruled countries. But our duties in both instances are increasing and are assuming gigantic proportions. Therefore, we must do our planning so that it shall never be said that we have failed either ourselves or our country or our kinsmen in time of crisis. We pray for the coming of better days for all. May the year 5704 mark the fulfillment of the hopes of all right- thinking people that justice shall for ever rule on earth. , The Palestine Political Intrigue The conviction of two Palestinian Jews—Leib Sirkin and Abraham Rachlin—on charges of illegal possession and sale of arms comes as a shock to all Jews. British authorities, and public opinion in all democratic countries should be made aware of the attitude of Jewry in this case, which has been a disturbing factor in establishing amicable British-Jewish relations. While the Palestinian court directed charges against rec- ognized Jewish organizations whom it sought to involve in the course of the trial which ended last week, the British spokesmen completely ignored the fact that in times of trouble, when the British as well as the Jews were threat- ened by Arab bandits, the very organizations now accused were invited to help put an end to disturbances. * * "Political intriguers" are accused by Israel Mereminsky, Spokesman for the Histadruth, the Palestine Federation of Labor, as being responsible for the trumped-up charges against the two Jews. • Louis Lipsky spoke in the same vein when he declared that the gun-running trial was "part and parcel of a systematic effort by the Palestine government to discredit Jewish aspirations in Palestine by indirection and conniving." The Zionist, and therefore the Jewish, position in. Pales- tine will be weakened seriously unless there is a revision of the decision of the court in this case. Therefore, united Jew- ish support should be given to the appeals against the ver- dicts. Carey and Fascists Repudiated The Jewish News is pleased to make known the facts with regard to Edward Carey, the anti-Semitic candidate for Mayor who was snowed under in Tuesday's Primary Elec- tion, as contained in the following letter addressed to us by Corporation Counsel Paul E. Krause: "One, Edward Carey, is circulating a vicious un-Ameri- can document, which is composed of many falsehoods. Among the falsehoods, he states that he was employed by the Corp- oration Counsel's Office, Real Estate Division. This is utterly false, because Edward Carey was never at any time em- ployed by this Office. As a matter of fact he has been strick- en from the City rolls as a City employe. "I bitterly resent the statements made in the document as a Fascist attack upon the American people." We welcome this statement, as we know all justice- loving Americans will, as a complete vindication of the principles which distinguish this land from the backward countries of Europe where Nazism and Fascism were able to get a foothold because minds like Carey's were permitted to function. It is not Carey alone who is repudiated, both by the voters of Detroit and our Corporation Counsel, but all the crackpots who think and act like him stand shamefully condemned. LETTER BOX Publication Society's Thanks To The Jewish News BOARD OF DIRECTORS MAURICE ARONSSON PHILIP SLOMOVITZ FRED M. BUTZEL ISIDORE SOBELOFF THEODORE LEVIN ABRAHAM SRERE MAURICE H. SCHWARTZ HENRY WINEMAN VOL. 4—NO. 3 Friday, October 8, 1943 Who Are Jewry's Spokesmen? There is still considerable speculation as to the fate of the American Jewish Conference, and the Jews of this coun- try have reason to feel disturbed over the continued duplica- tion of effort among numerous agencies. It is unfortunate that this authoritative body should not have been given the right to speak for our people. Instead, several different delegations conferred with Secre- tary of State Cordell Hull, and confusion continues to reign in our ranks. What is even worse is that failure to solidify our ranks so that the centrally-selected body will speak for us also confuses the minds of non-Jews. * * Here is'a typical example of what is permitted to happen in the name of American Jewry. The so-called Emergency Committee to Save the Jewish People of Europe this week announced that "five hundred orthodox rabbis will march on Washington Wednesday, Oct. 6, to urge immediate action by the President and Congress to save the millions of Jewish people trapped in Europe." . This is a Revisionist-inspired approach to action. It is not the type of action that is generally approved by the recognized spokesrrien in American Jewry. But insofar as non-Jewish public opinion is concerned, such a "march" may be interpreted as an outburst of Jewish impatience rather than as the ill-advised work of a small group working under a high-sounding name. It is clear that the work to achieve unity in our ranks has only begun. But it is unfortunate that it must be approached with a view of discrediting those who are not helping our cause by disrupting our unity. The Bnai Brith Centennial This week marks the completion of a century of serv- ice by the Bnai Brith. The splendid analysis of Bnai Brith accomplishments by Bernard Postal, which we published in our Rosh Hashanah issue, is supplemented by a very interesting comment on Bnai Brith's role in American and Jewish life by Henry Monsky, the president of Bnai Brith,. in this issue of The Jewis2.1 News. Bnai Brith has much to its credit. In the field of philan- thropy and education, in the important role the movement has played in preventing defamation of the good name of the Jewish people, it has earned the appreciation of Jews everywhere. As an international order, with functioning branches in all parts of the world—now, of course, only in the democra- tic countries—Bnai Brith is one of the major movements in Jewish life. The part played by the Bnai Brith, and especially. by its president, Henry Monsky, in the creation of the American Jewish Conference, adds to this movement's significant role in American-Jewish life. Our sincerest good wishes to the Bnai Brith on this an- niversary is accompanied with the hope that the beginning of its second century of service will be marked by the end of tyranny and bigotry and the beginning of days of joy for Jewry, AmeriCa and all mankind. Editor, The Jewish News: At the end of the year 5703, The Jewish Publication Society of America can take inventory and find itself in its healthiest condition in the past fifty-six years. Our books and the serv- ices of our Press Division have gained encomiums far and wide. You have played an important part in making the past year so successful. The publicity which you have given our Society in your , columns has told our story to members of the American Jewish community and has made it possible for us to increase our membership in your community. The "Official Family" is deeply grateful and extends to you its sincerest good wishes. May I add my personal wishes for all of the good things in life and a prayer for an early .peace? Cordially yours, MAURICE JACOBS Executive Director * * * A Compliment from Dr. Birkhead Editor, Jewish News: I commend your excellent pa- per as being not only the best edited Jewish weekly, but more especially as being the most read- able. L. M. BIRKHEAD Director, Friends of Democracy New York City. * * * The Rosh Hashanah Issue Editor, The Jewish News: Your Rosh Rashanah issue is superb. As a student of journal- ism, I must tell you how deeply impressed I am with it, as well as with your regular weekly is- sues. The New Year issue stands out primarily for this reason: Only one of your articles—the Bnai Brith history—"jumped" off one page to another. Thus, you made it possible for your readers to finish each article on the page begun, without necessitating the turning of pages. Congratulations and best wish- es. GEORGE F. WEISS. * * * A Former Jewish News Staff Member Commends New Year Issue The following telegram was re- ceived this week by The Jewish News from Pte. Robert Clifton of the Canadian Armed. Forces, at Barrie, Ont., former member of the editorial staff of The Jewish News: "LeShono Tovo Tikosevu. May 5704 be filled with everything good and bring us peace, joy and security. Congratulations. Out- standing New Year edition brings happy memories of the nicest people. Am passing the issue around. Keep up the good work, and best of luck." * * * A Chalenge to Yeshivah Editor, The Jewish News: On Sept. 24, The Jewish News announced that "Beth Jacob Re- ligious School for Girls, spon- sored by the Ladies of Yeshivah Beth Yehuda, has opened a be, ginn.ers' class for girls 6 to 12 .. . Enrollment for this class and for the Kindergarten are accepted by the Yeshivah." May I ask the august body (1) since when do Yeshivahs (higher institutions of Talmudic studies) sponsor elementary schools for girls and kindergarten classes? (2) Is the august body in sympa- thy with the policies of the Uni- ted Hebrew Schools? (3) If you are, why do you sponsor new schools for elementary Hebrew education? Isn't the United He- brew Schools in position to form. new classes to provide adequate- ly for the needs of the Jewish community? Wouldn't the organ- ization of new schools impede the progress the United Hebrew Schools? (4) If you are not in sympathy with the United Hebrew Schools' educational system, why do you partake in its managemmt as members of its board of directors and in other ways show ycur af- tialia:.ion with that system? THEODORE OLENDER.
