ENGGASS . It is a well-known fact that the refugees who have found a haven in the United States are serving the cause of democracy in the present war. But this tact was dramatically brought home to me the other day wdien I read the story of how Prof. Karl Sollner, a refugee chemist, had collaborated in the invention of a "belly still," which will save the lives of many Allied fighters. • Prof. Sollner, who was assisted by the National Refugee Service when he arrived in this country, devised a mechanism whereby sea water-can be converted into drink- ing water. The lives of many ship- wrecked sailors and airmen will Mr. Enggass .-unclobutedly be saved as the result of this invention. *There are many other cases of how the scientific skill of newcomers has been harnessed to the war effort. To support the program for refugee adjustment we must furnish the necessary resources through the United Jewish Appeal for Refugees, Overseas Needs and Palestine, which is the major beneficiary of the Allied Jewish Campaign. Because of the critical need in providing every opportunity for rescue and survival for oppressed and homeless Jews, it is vitally important that we help assure the success of the War Chest campaign this year. In this way we can serve the Jewish people as well as the Allied peoples in the fight for freedom. By providing funds for the United Jewish Appeal, included among the War Chest overseas agencies, the great drive for $8,250,000 will send out words of cheer to those who look to free America for sustenance and for courage.
