Dear Boys and Girls:
Tonight we begin observance
of the most sacred day on the
Jewish calendar — Yom Kippur,
the Day of Atonement.
This day is so sacred that it is
also known as the Sabbath of
Sabbaths.
As you know, observance of
this solemn day begins with Kol
Nidre services Friday night. The
concluding service is known as
Neilah.
I hope that those of you who

Upbuilding of Palestine as Solution to Jewish Problem
Stressed In Campaign to Get New Members;
Group Meets Here Tuesday

A plea to "turn sympathy for
the Jewish victims of Nazi anti-
Semitism into a practical pro-
gram of assistance through the
upbuilding of Palestine," was is-
sued at the inception of a mem-
bership campaign by the local
Business and Professional Divi-
sion of Hadassah.
According to Misses Tessie
Rabinowitz and Lillian Gordon,
membership chairmen, the re-
cent American Jewish Confer-
ence, at which most major Jew-
ish organizations were repre-
sented, "gave the Zionists of
this country a clear indication of
the mass support for Palestine."
Next Meeting Tuesday
The next meeting of the Busi-
ness and Profession Division will
take place Tuesday evening, at
Hotel Statler. An invitation is
extended to all members and
friends to attend.
Sophie Blanche Schwartz, pres-
ident of the Division, said: "Ne-
ver before in the history of the
American community has there
been such a keen realization of
the significance and immediacy
of the Jewish problem. Palestine
as a solution is no longer a theory.
Jewish Palestine has proven that
it can only answer the expand-
ing needs of peace time popula-
tion, but that it can meet the
challenge of a war period as well.
"We hope that tens of thous-
ands of American Jewish women
will, through their membership.
in Hadassah, testify to their de-
termination that the Jewish prob-
lem shall be efectively solved."
Convention in N. Y.
Miss Schwartz stated that at
Hadassah's forthcoming conven-
tion in New York City, Oct. 25
through Oct. 28, the organization
will lay the lines of its political
action for the year and discuss

ways of strengthening its prac-
tical contribution to the Ameri-
can war efort and to Palestine.

RENTISS M. BROWN'S

ROSH HASHANAH GREETINGS TO THE JEWS OF THE NATION

5704

PRENTISS M. BROWN

Administrator 0. P. A.

A New Era with the Destruction of Tyrants

The Jewish New Year 5704 is ushered in during the most serious conflict
that has ever been waged in the world. Never has there been so much at stake.

In greeting my fellow citizens of Michigan and the nation, I share with all
free men the conviction that tyranny will be destroyed and that new life and
new hope will soon dawn for oppressed and terrified humanity.

With calmness let us stand behind our beloved President Roosevelt and
fight the good fight for liberty and freedom.

In this critical hour, let us give the best that is in us to preserve the light
of democracy and the lofty ideals of the American way of life.

It is my earnest wish on this sacred occasion that the coming year may be
one of health and strength, that we may better face the problem of life in these
critical times, for ourselves, our country and all mankind.

Sincerely yours,

Acit,ta411/1445-toli
