Cpl. Miller, Noted Detroit Musician,
Sends Greetings From South Pacific

The Best Humor Stories of the Year

Three Virtues

Among the Rosh Hashanah
greetings from the war fronts
as compiled by the American
Red Cross is one from a Detroit-
er, Cpl. Carl ,Miller,. whose
home is at 2008 Leslie Ave.
A member of the Service Co.,
126th Inf. Reg., Cpl. Miller is an
accomplished musician, his stud-
ies having been interrupted by
the war. Located somewhere in
the South Pacific, he is assist-
ant to • Chaplain Dubberley.
In this theater of war Cpl. Mil-
ler has completed a cycle of four
songs for soprano, and a new
quartette for oboe, violin, viola
and cello.

A Difference in Queens

Once during the reign of
Queen Victoria, the great Jewish
actress, Sarah Bernhardt ap-
peared on the London stage in
the role of Cleopatra.
Came the scene where Cleo-
patra receives news of Marc An-
thony's defeat at Actium. Bern-
hardt was at her best that night
as Egypt's fiery queen. She
stabbed the unfortunate slave
who had borne the tidings to
her, raved, frothed at the mouth,
wrecked the palace and finally,
as the curtain fell, dropped in a
heap in the wreckage.
During a lull in the thunder-
ous applause which followed, a
middle-aged British matron was
heard to remark in tones of
great satisfaction to her com-
panion, "How different, how
very different, from the home
life of our own dear queen."

Chilling Thought

The noted theatrical manager,
Charles Frohman, found himself
tormented by a persistent play-
wright who kept turning up
with an impossible farce, slight-
ly rewritten each time in the
hope of eventual acceptance.
Seven times was the play sub-
mitted and seven times was it
rejected.
When the playwright came yet
again, Frohman told him firmly
and finally that the play would
not do.
"But, sir," insisted the author,
"is there no possible way you
could put my farce oh the.
stage?"
"Well," said the manager,
"there's one way, but I don't
know if you'd submit—"
"Oh, I'd submit!" exclaimed
the playwright. . "I'd submit to
anything!" , • .
"Then,"- said Frohman, "we'll
grind it up and use it as a snow-
storm."

Reports from Austrian and
"Sudeten" German commercial
agents indicate that there will
soon be no genuine Nazis left in
Austria and the "Sudeten" dis-
Arict in Czechoslovakia. Many
ianti-NaziS are still members of
the Party, but only . on paper,
since they fear victimization if
they leave the Party. Opposi-
tion against the Nazis is increas-
ing, particularly among the
workers. The new version of
the Horst Wessel song, sung in
factories and workers' residen-
tial quarters is as follows:

"Die Preise hoch, die Laeden
fest geschlOssen,
Der Magen knurrt bei jedem
Schritt and Tritt.
Die Hitler, Goering, Goebbels
LEON OBERMAYER, Phila-

delphia attorney and educator,

U. S. Engineer Gets Post

Three Years and After .

When the Germans succeeded
last fall in persuading the Czech
authorities controlled by them to
introduce officially the Nazi sa-
lute by raising the hand, the
Czech patriots commented upon
this achievement as follows:
"Well, it took the Nazis ex-
actly three years to raise the
Czech hand. We shall raise both
their hands and feet much more
quickly. The only trouble. is that
there may not be enough lamp-
poSts for all of them. And there
will be no `go : Slow' campaign
'wenn der Tag kommt'."

Keep On Buying U. S. War Bonds For

Treasury Secr etar y Henry
Morgenthau Jr., is a tough man
to get news out of. Several years
ago, when the Treasury started
to buy silver at advanced prices,
a group of newspapermen called
at his office to find out how the
financial market would be af-
fected.
"Would you mind telling us
how you intend to use your new
power?" asked one reporter.
Mr. Morgenthau smiled mys-
teriously and replied:
"Enthusiastically."
