AN IDEAL POCKET CALENDAR
The -Jewish National-Fund of America
retains the distinction of being the pub-
lisher of the' most interesting and -most-
informative Jewish calendar..
For 5704, the J. .N. P. has prepared a
booklet which may well serve as a
pocket encydlopedia for those interested
in the work for Palestine's redemption.
Until the outbreak of the war, the
J. N. F. calendars were published in
Palestine, in all languages, and were
shipped to all Diaspora countries for cir-
culation. Since then, the calendar has
been compiled and printed in this coun-
_
. try.

EDITOR SPIEGELMAN
William Z. Spiegelman is the modest
editor of the J. N. F. 5704 Calendar. • An
able newspaperman he was formerly
the editor of the Jewish Telegraphic
Agency—he is now serving as public re-
lations director of the JewiSh National.
Fund of America.
Mr. Spiegelman possesses the quality
Of being able to gather accuratelY, fac-
tual material on Palestine. He is lin-
guist, is a master of Hebrew and is high-
ly qualified to write on Zionism and
Palestine. As a result, - the calendar 'he
has compiled is a guide to Eretz Israel:
and the part the JewS''=have played in
the eviction of the Axis' frbin the Medi-
terranean countries.

DR. WEIZMANN'S 70TH BIRTHDAY
Of particular interest in this S. N. F.
5704 Calendar is the announcement that
Dr. Chaim Weizmann's birthday „Will oc
cur on the Sixth of Kislev—Dec. 3, 1943.
Jews who will be free to celebrate the-
occasion should prepare now to plan
elaborate observance of this day.
Weizmann is world Jewry's out-
standing leader. It was largely due to
his efforts that the British government
issued the Balfour Declaration on Nov. 2,
1917. A half million Jews therefore owe
it to him that they have found freedom
and security in Palestine.

A .-WEIZMANN DECLARATION
Dr. Weizmann is not only an able lead-
er in Israel. He is a brilliant interpreter
of our people's needs. His genius' as the
guide of world Jewry has caused Many
to forget the fact that he is one of the
world's greatest chemists.
The J. N. F. Calendar quotes from Dr.
Weizmann's statements to his people.
Among them is the following:
"There is nothing ready-made in Pal-
estine. All has yet to be created. We are
-building on ctony ground, on dry and
bare rocks. The field and the orchard,
the village and the town, the kindergar-
ten and the University —these are the
fundamentals on which we build up our
new life, and the joy of this great crea-
tive effort courses through the veins of
Jewry."
This joy in witnessing creative efforts
by our people should encourage in-
creased interest in Jewish national re-
demption and in land reclamation
through the Jewish National Fund. It
should lead to the complete success of all
J. N. F. undertakings'—and in Detroit it
should encourage the enlistment of large
numbers of signers on the Rosh Hasha-
nah Scroll to be sent to Palestinian Jew-
ry as a signal of our faith in the ultimate
success of the efforts of the builders of
Zion.

Detroit from the Jewish National Fund Council,

Quotation of the Week

"The time has come for a more natural human approach of
Government to the desperate problem of the - Jewish people. This
moment of decision demands that Government in Washington, as •
well as in London, pay us at least the tribute of candor. We have no.
arms or navic.: or flying fortresses. We have no gold mines or oil
We haVe none of the powers or authorities of government.
We are a people greatly hurt and greatly wronged. We emerge out
of this war, out of the valley of death deeply .Wounded, broken as.-
never before. We have a right to demand that the play of diplomatic
formalities be discarded with relationship to Jewish suffering and
Jewish oppression and that there should be frank dealing in Wash-
-ington, as well as in London. There is needed an assurance in plain
. , speech that the covenant made is intended to be kept; that the
principle of equality declared for all shall be applied also to us;
that the National Home about which America and England have
made definite and oft-repeated statements and declarations shall
not be left in doubt, shall not be abandoned for other interests, shall_ --
not be treated as a trivial incident in the remaking of the world and -
that Jewish suffering and Jewish rights shall be treated with respect."

SIGNS OF THE TIMES
When the war started the.Nazis. placed
huge contracts with the Swedish stone
industry for blocks of red, black and
gray granite, which they planned to use
for the post-war construction of monu-
ments and buildings to commemorate
the expected Nazi victory . . . Nov the
Swedish quarries have been notified by
the Germans to cut no more of these
blocks . . . Could be the Nazis aren't so
sure they'll be able to use them?
To Benny Rubin is credited the tale
of how Hitler phoned Hirohito th check
on how the war was going in his part
of the world . .. To Adolf's question the
Mikado replied: "Oh, it's going much
better here". . . "Same here," came
back Hitler, "much better than next

WEEKLY GIGGLE
Hitler, Goebbels and Goering, relates
Winchell, are getting the wind up and
have frequent -- serious discussions as to
what their fate may be after the Allies
have won their final victory . . On one
such occasion, it seems, Goebbels cheer-
ily remarked to chubby Hermann, the
airman: "You know what'll happen to
you after the war, Goering? . You'll
be shot" . . ."Izzatso?" retorted Fatso
. "Well, I know different . . • The
Americans know I'm a good pilot, and
they'll give me a job in one of their air
lines" . . "Well, for that matter," said
Goebbels, "I'm not much worried either
. . . The Americans know what a good
liar I am, and they'll probably offer me
a job writing editorials for some of their .
papers . . I. guess you and 1 : are pretty
safe after all . . • But what about you .
Adolf? . . 'What's 'going to happen to
you'•when we lose the war and the Allies
start getting after all us Germans?" . . .
"Me," shrieked Hitler . . . "They can't do
anything: to me . . . "I'm an'Atistrian."

THE JEWISH THEATER
Who said that :the Yiddish theater is
dying in America? . . . At the annual
meeting of the, Jewish Actors Union I
heard Reuben Guskin, the pillar of the
organization, announce that - no less than
10 Yiddish theaters will be opened this
season in New York . . . Chicago will
have a Yiddish theater too . . . It is also
possible that Yiddish theaters will be
opened in Detroit, Cleveland, Los An-
geles, Boston and Philadelphia . • •
What puzzled me is how come that
cities like Philadelphia, Los Angeles and_
the others have: no Yiddish. theaters at
when the Jewish population
there is sufficiently large to ' patronie
more than one such theater . . It does
no credit to the Jewish cultural leaders
in these cities if they do not reali2e the
necesity of maintaining a Jewish theater
there . . . And what about such cities
as Toronto and Montreal? . . . Why
should the Jews of Canada have no
Jewish theaters at all? . . It was grat-
ifying to hear at the meeting the pledge
given by the Jewish actors to help
nancially in the' rebuilding of the Jew-
ish theater in Europe after the war . .
-And this at a time when of the 310 mem-
bers in the Jewish Actors Union, 110
are unemployed . . The most remark-
able thing about the Jewish Actors Uri:
ion is that while suffering from unem-
ployment, it nevertheless admitted this
year 60 new applicants . . . This is more
than any labor union can boast of . . .
Usually no union accepts new memberS
when the shadow of unemployment
hovers over it . . . All this is due to the
fine tradition which Reuben Guskin has
modestly developed in the Actors Union
during the 25 years of his managership
. . . His activities . in building the union
will be celebrated this year, much
against his will. ,

Jews on Australian streets have been

that a s pecial committee - has called upon
such victims to report the incidents for
further action . . Prof. Elkin, noted

the estallishment in. his country of ru-

in the United States. He feels that this
would b! valuable in combatting anti-

NILES AGAIN
Frank Weller, Associated Press writer,
contributes an interesting picture of
David lc, Niles, one of the President's
six assistants, whom he describes as
"head man" of the lot. "This short,
dark, 54-year-old bachelor, who is get-
ting a little thick in the middle, lives
in a swank downtown hotel and reads
himself to sleep, was born Neyhus, the
son of a Russian tailor in Boston. He
was a close friend of the great Jewish
liberal, the late Associate Justice Louis
Brandeis_ and is a. pal of the Jewish
liberal, Associate Justice Felix Frank-
furter." If an English-Jewish weekly
had used the phrase "the Jewish liberal"'
. to describe .Mr., Justice Frankfurter, it
would have been regarded as chauvin-
ism or infelicitous. What is it when an
Associated Press writer uses the same
phrase? -
