Community Council to Hold
First Quarterly Conference

The season's first quarterly conference of delegates of
the Jewish Community Council will be held next Tuesday
eevning in the auditorium of the Jewish Community Center,
Woodward at Holbrook.
James I. Ellmann, council president, will be chairman of
the meeting and will welcome Detroit's representatives to

COLUMBUS, O.—Meeting under the spell of the historic
sessions of the American Jewish Conference which con-
cluded in New York 10 days earlier, the 46th annual con-
vention of the Zionist Organization of America, in session
here from Saturday night through Monday night, reaffirmed
the determination of Zionists to carry on the work for the

ment's continued interest in the
relief of refugees, declared with
reference to Palestine:
"I am confident that the help-
ful contributions made by Amer-
ican citizens toward the estab-
lishment of a National Home for
the Jewish people in Palestine
will be continued."
There was a message from Dr.
Chaim Weizmann, president of
the Jewish Agency for Palestine,
expressing confidence that. "the
Jewish people will be regenerat-
ed through the Jewish Common-
wealth in its ancestral home."
Secretary of the Treasury
Henry Morgenthau's message
was full of praise for Jewish
achievements in Palestine.
No Special Favors
Dr. Silver's address to the pub-
lic meeting of the convention
made the point that Jews ask no
special favors; that our people
desire to build with their hands
and not to expropriate any one;
that Jews seek to live a free and
independent life in their own na-
tional home.
Louis Lipsky's address was
typical of the man who has been
hailed as the ablest interpreter
of Zionist principles. Brilliant in
its construction, Mr. Lipsky's
speech reviewed the deteriora-
tion of international relationships
in the last 25 years which led to
Great Britain's viewing the posi-
tion of the Jewish people from
the point of view of expediency.
He declared that "Britain traded
a loyal friend for a potential
enemy" and condemned those
who are trying to destroy the
pledges made to the Jewish
people.
Splendid Appeal
Another address that was hail-
ed as one of the finest of the
convention was Dr. James G.
Heller's splendid appeal to Presi-
dent Roosevelt and Prime Minis-
ter Churchill to help make a
reality of the promise to the
Jews for the redemption of Pal-
estine.
Mrs. Archibald Silverman of
Providence brought greetings
from the Jews of England. Re-
cently returned from a tour of
England in the interest of the

establishment of a Jewish Com-
monwealth in Palestine and
showed unparalleled strength in
support of the Jewish nationalist
cause.
With all internal strife elim-
inated, this convention was the
most peaceful and most harmon-
ious in American Zionism in the
past 20 years.
Aspect of Solidarity
Also, the spirit of confidence
that was evident in all discus-
sions gave this year's Zionist
gathering an aspect of Zionist
solidarity that is unprecedented.
The election of Dr. Israel Gold-
stein as president of the organiza-
tion, to succeed Judge Louis E.
Levinthal, was by unanimous ac-
tion. His nomination was sup-
ported in a letter to the conven-
tion by Dr. Stephen S. Wise, who
was prevented from attending by
illness in the family; and by Dr.
Abba Hillel Silver. Dr. 'James G.
Heller was re-elected chairman
of the national administrative
committee.
It was made known dur-
ing the convention that Dr.
Chaim Weizmann had hailed
the selection of Dr. Abba
Hillel Silver as co-chairman
of the Emergency Committee
for Zionist Affairs.
The resolutions adopted by the
convention reaffirmed the stand
taken by the American Jewish
Conference on the question of a
Jewish Commonwealth as well
as on issues involving immediate
rescue of Jews from Nazi-held
Europe.
Absence of Pessimism
. The convention was highlight-
ed by several excellent addresses.
While the speakers pleaded for
realistic approaches to the solu-
tion of the Jewish problem, there
was almost complete absence of
pessimism with regard to the
future of the Zionist position, de-
spite the reported numerous ob-
stacles that have been placed in
the path of the movement in
Washington, London and Jeru-
salem.
Dr. Nahum Goldmann, member
of the executive of the Jewish
Agency, in one of his character-
istically brilliant a d d r e s s e s,
pointed out that only the last
push is needed to bring Zionism
to complete realization.
Inspired by the unification of
American Jewry in support of
the Jewish Commonwealth, the
convention launched a drive for
150,000 new members. Of this
number, it is hoped • that 2,500
will enroll as life members at
$100, the $250,000 fund to be in-
vested in Jewish • National Fund
Bonds.
10 Detroiters Enroll
At the convention, 10 De-
troiters enrolled as life members,
in addition to the more than 20
who have been enrolled previ-
ously in life memberships. Harry
Cohen, chairman of the Detroit
membership committee, a n d
Isaac Shetzer were instrumental
in interesting the Detroit group
in this life plan.
In his presidential report,
Judge Levinthal warned against
half-way measures in approach-
ing the solution to the Jewish
problem and called for vigilance
in safeguarding the status of Pal-
estine after the war.
Judge Levinthal praised the
activities of Simon Shetzer, ex-
ecutive secretary of the organiz-
ation, and expressed the organ-
ization's gratitude to him for his
devoted services during the past
year.
Numerous Messages
Numerous- messages of impor-

convention including one by

Nov. 6 Set For
Balfour Ball

Abraham Cooper, president of
the Zionist Organization of De-
troit, this week announced that
Nov. 6 has been set as the date
for the annual Balfour Ball, to
take place at Hotel Statler.
Mr. Cooper stated that pro-
ceeds of the dance, which has
become a traditional social event
in this community, will be used
to finance educational and youth
activities under the auspices of
the Zionist Organization.
An important educational pro-
gram will be announced next
week by Walter Field, chairman
of the program committee.

Refugees Help Teach
Languages to Soldiers

Many refugees are aiding the
war effort by teaching the lan-
guages of their native lands to
Americans who will enter some
of those lands with our armies,
it was disclosed this week by the
NRS.
Their placement in jobs in the
language training project now
under way in universities co-
operating in the War Depart-
ment's Army Specialized Train-
ing Program, has been made
possible by the National Refu-
gee Service, whose work is fi-
nanced by the United Jewish
Appeal.
When the need arose for
teachers versed in the languages
of America's enemies as well as
her Allies, NRS revealed that a
number of refugees enrolled in
its placement service were well
qualified to teach foreign lan-
guages.
