AMERICA
"The nation being at war, and the ex-
igencies of the naval service requiring the
full-time effort of all personnel, the grant-
ing of leave to personnel of the Jewish
faith to permit them to observe the High
Holy days and other Jewish holidays can-
not consistently be authorized as has cus-
tomarily been done in peacetime," it is
stated in a circular letter issued by the
Navy Department to all ships and stations,
in connection with the approaching Rosh
Hashanah and Yom Kippur holidays .. •
The following paragraph then says that
"commanding officers will, whenever
practicable, grant suitable liberty to men
of Jewish faith in order that they may
attend services in locations nearest their
stations."
A book recording the good-will mission
in America of Prof. Solomon Mikhoels and
Lt. Col. Itzik Feffer will be presented to
the Soviet Jewish emissaries as "a token
of Soviet American friendship," it was
announced by Sholem Asch, president of
the Committee of Jewish Writers and Ar-
tists, sponsors of the delegation's nation-
wide tour.
Emil Ludwig, noted German Jewish
author and member of the ExecutiVe Com-
mittee of the Emergency Committee to
Save the Jews of Europe, declared in an
interview that since self-respecting Jews
would not wish to return to a land where
they are not wanted, Palestine must be
the Jewish haVen_ after the war. He said
that it was. his opinion that a plebiscite
should be conducted in each European
country to determine whether Jewish
refugees might return to their native
lands. •
"The Jews of Great Britain expect
American Jewry to take a positive and
unequivocal stand in favor of a Jewish
Commonwealth in PaleStine," it was de-
clared by Mrs. Archibald Silverman, Zion-
ist leader, upon her return to this country
following a tour of the British Isles in the
interest of the Palestine Foundation Fund.
PALESTINE

with various commemorative services.
Black-bordered pages carrying articles de-

When ... and if . . . the bloody
Nazis are ever brought before a
World Tribunal, Actor Kurt
Katch would like to ask Goering
and his actress wife, Emmy Son-
nemann, one accusing question—
one which opens up the whole
story of Nazi torture of the Jews.
The question Xis: Where is Lelly
Corvan?
Prior to 1933 Katch was an
actor in the Munich Kammer-
spiele. He knew Hitler person-
ally as a comic rabble - rouser,
whom even Goering and his
gang didn't take seriously. At
that time there was an actress,
Emmy Sonneman, whose name
was linked with Hitler's before
she married Goering. Every
summer this Sonnemann used to
vacation at a resort at Sulz. She
herself couldn't afford this out-
ing, but she had a very good
friend, a well-to-do Jewish wo-
man, Lelly Corvan, who paid
the way. Many presents also
went from Lelly to Emmy. But
in 1933 Lelly Corvan vanished.
. . has never been heard from
since. Goering had bought the
resort . . . and the whole place
belonged to Emmy Sonneman,
THE LEAST WE CAN
DO FOR HIM—
OVERSEAS
The Nazis have introduced into Den-
mark the anti-Jewish laws which prevail
in all Nazi-occupied countries and which
the Danish government had consistently
refused to enact. All Jewish institutions
and business enterprises have been closed.
The Bucharest Porunki Vromi demands
the "eradication" of those Jews who are
allegedly continuing to conduct their busi-
nesses under the names of their non-
Jewish partners. The latter should also
be eliminated, the anti-Semitic sheet
urges.
The sale of "Mein Kampf" in Sweden
has been prohibited by order of the gov-
ernment. It is reported that the Swedish
government has withdrawn 150,000 copies
of the book which were in circulation.
The Hungarian government has granted
permission to Yiddish theatrical groups to
give performances in the provincial towns
of Hungary. They are -still prohibited
from performing in Budapest, hoWever.
The works of Jewish artists are among
those now on display at the all-Soviet ex-
hibition of Russian artists currently being
held at Alma-Ata, the capital of Kazak-
stan.
Algerian Jewish leaders have made
arrangements for special Rosh Hashanah
and Yom Kippur services for Jewish
soldiers in the Allied forces stationed in
North Africa and Sicily.
Schechita, the ritual slaughter of ani-
mals, which had been prohibited in Italy
under the rule of Benito Mussolini, is now
permitted '-in the city of Trieste, according
to an official statement issued by the
Trieste. chief of police.
The -American Jewish Conference has
received much attention from the German
press . and radio. Voelkischer Beobachter
declared that the Conference is a "Jewish
victory conference," at which Jewish lead-
ers have assembled to decide the fate of
defeated Germany.
The Stockholm Nydag, in an article -by
a Latvian Jew, M. Jablinsky, who escaped
to Sweden, states that 80,000 Jews were
massacred in Latvia.
It is reported in Kuibyshev that when
the Red Army recaptured Taganrog not
a single Jew was found alive in the city.
All the Jews who failed to escape from
Taganrog were exterminated by the Nazis.

then his wife. So Katch would
like to know: Where is Lelly
Corvan? And whose money did
Goering use to buy the place at
Sulz?

Alexander Granach succeeded
as an actor only after he had had
his legs broken three times.
Born knock-kneed, he couldn't
seem to impress European stage
directors with the seriousness of
his intentions because of those
funny knees. He went to a hos-
pital . . . submitted to a surgeon
breaking his legs three times .. .
came out with straight legs after
a year of treatment . . . and
thenceforth achieved his ambi-
tion to be famous in the theater.

B. 0. — but colossal: 'In its
coast-to-coast premieres at 107
theaters, "This Is the Army"
grossed more than one million
dollars. The openings on the
west coast alone yielded a half
million. Which is something be-
yond adjectival exclamation —
even for Hollywood!

Selznick's "Gone With the
Wind" has grossed $31,000,000 in
the U. S. alone during its four
years of exhibition. Has played
to 6,000,000 ticket buyers! Its
foreign releases have broken all
precedent. In London it has run
continuously at one theater for
four yearsl
