Jewish Welfare Board Message

Palestine

The chassidic rabbi, Nachman
of Pratzlav, once wrote a series
of 15 paragraphs glorifying Pal-
estine. In that land, he said, all
holiness begins.
The highest result of prayer
and virtuous conduct is the abil-
ity to visit the land. Those who
remain are true heroes. Above
all, "Palestine is the nerve center
of Israel." This is the attitude of
pious Jews.
But practical Jews and even
irreligious Jews also look upon
the Holy Land as the center of
all Jewish striving. All Jews,
reared on sacred memory and
love of the Holy Land, wish to
build up Zion. Zionists seek a
return there of Israel's former
glories in a state belonging to
their own people. In some man-
ner the interests and efforts of
all Jews of the world are direct-
ed toward "Eretz Israel," the
land of Israel.
The truth is that Jews have
never lost their character as a
people historically rooted in Pal-
estine.
No matter what changes time
has wrought in Jewish religious
observance, the main tenets of
the religion have remained es-
sentially the same for three
thousand years. The Jew can-
not break with the past without
losing his identity. The most
significant relic of that past is
the land of Palestine.
Palestine is as much a part of
traditional Judaism as are the
Bible, the Mishnah, the syna-
gogue prayers.

In 1902, the funeral of Rabbi
Jacob Joseph who became chief
rabbi of the Orthodox congrega-
tions of New York in 1888 was
attended by 20,000 Jews and
stoned by a number of anti-
Semites. His grandson, who
joined the U. S. Marine Corps
two years before the attack on
Pearl Harbor, was promoted to
captain "for meritorious service"
and was later killed in action in
the South Pacific.
State Senator Joseph Lazarus,
Capt. Joseph's father, was chair-

at the ceremony, at which the
school was dedicated to the
"Four Freedoms."
