The Michigan Synagogue Con-
ference last summer commis-
sioned Dr. Selig S. Auerbach,
then rabbi of Rodeph Sholom
Congregation, Rome, Ga., to tour
the smaller Jewish communities
and to make a survey of condi-
tions and needs. His report in-
dicated that there is need for a
regional director, but lack of
funds prevented the augmenta-
tion of the proposed program. , •
This summer, Rabbi Auerbach,
associated with the Bureau of
Jewish Education in Cincinnati
and rabbi of New Hope Congre-
gation in that city, again went to
Northern Michigan as "summer
rabbi" of Congregation Bnai
Israel in Petoskey to extend
work in other congregations. His
report to the Michigan Syna-
gogue Conference resulted in
steps to set up a permanent Cir-
cuit Rabbinate.
Rabbi's Salary Voted
A. rabbi's salary was voted, to
be reimbursed by congregations
in the circuit.

CHILDREN'S
CORNER

Dear Boys and Girls:
School days are here again!
I know that all my readers
will not limit their interests to
the necessary studies in the pub-
lic schools, but will also devote
themselves diligently to their
Jewish school work.
In the making of a new world,
after this war, there will be im-
portant problems to be solved by
the Jews in behalf of their less
fortunate kinsmen in the war-
torn countries. To be privileged
to help in solving these issues,
we will have to be well informed
on Jewish history and traditions.
You, boys and girls, must be-
gin to prepare for a day of lead-
ership in Jewish life by acquir-
ing the knowledge that is offered
you in our schools.
One of the subjects you must
master is the Bible. Therefore I
am printing here statements by
great men of past generations on
the Bible.
Again I wish you all a very
happy Sabbath.
UNCLE DANIEL.

It is pointed out that 15 years
ago, congregations in Northern
Michigan were orthodox, some
having schochtim, including Es-
canaba, Iron River, Petoskey and
Traverse City.
Later, when many Jews in
these communities moved else-
where, some of the communities
found it difficult to maintain
teachers and schochtim. Only
on Yahrzeits and Holy Days
were Minyanim organized. The
Circuit Rabbinate is intended to
solve this problem.

the Circuit Rabbinate will in-
clude Alpena, Petoskey, Port
Huron, Traverse City, Boyne
City, Cadillac, Charlevoix, Har-
bor Springs, Ludington, Manis-
tee and Rogers City.
Working out of Port Huron
during the year, and from Pe-
toskey during the summer, the
rabbi will visit the various com-
munities and will assist them in
their religious and educational
work.
