Rabbi S. P. Wohlgelernter of
Seattle, Wash., One of the leading
orthodox rabbis in America, will
be the speaker at the patriotic
convocation of Yeshivath Beth
Yehudah on Sunday, at 2 p. m., in
the Yeshivah Building, Dexter
and Cortland.
Rabbi Wohlgelernter will stop
here on his return from the
American Jewish Conference, to
which he was delegated . by his
community. Known for his ora-
torical talent, Rabbi Wohlgelern-
ter has achieved fame for his
rescue work done in behalf of
the European refugees stranded
in Kobo, Japan and Shanghai.
For more than a year, almost
weekly, transports from Japan
arrived in the Seattle port 'til the
fateful Pearl Harbor Sunday
locked the last road of escape
for the unfortunate victims of
Nazi pePsecution. For many
years president of the Seattle
Jewish Welfare Federation, Rab-
bi Wohlgelernter has contributed
greatly to the organization of
the United Palestine Appeal on
the western coast.
At the convocation, the "Book
of Life" will be opened, into
which many Detroit Jewish boys
serving .in the Armed Forces of
the United States will be in-
scribed. Special prayers will be
said for their safe and victorious
return. The public is invited to
this function.

2 Branches Opened
By Local Yeshivah

Yeshivath Beth Yehudah has
opened branches in different lo-
calities to overcome increased
difficulties of transportation . for
students living at a distance from
the Yeshivah building.
Rabbi Max J. Wohlgelernter,
president of Yeshivath Beth
Yehudah, announces that at its
last meeting the board of direc-
tors of Congregation Beth Tefilo
Emanuel, Woodrow Wilson and
Taylor, decided to offer to the
Yeshivah its classrooms for an
additional preparatory branch.
The classes of this branch will be
led by a member of \the Yeshivah
staff, under the supervision of
the Vaad Ha-Chinuch of the
Yeshivah. The branch curricu-
lum will be identical with the
curriculum of the Yeshivah.
An additional branch will be
opened in the Six Mile Road
neighborhood. Classes will meet
every afternoon in the Hampton
Public School, 18460 Warrington
Drive. Enrollments are accepted
by the Yeshivah office, HO. 7990,
and for the Beth Tefilo Emanuel
Branch by the office of the con-
gregation, TRinity 1-2934.

Rabbi Herschel Lymon, minis-
ter of religious education at Tem-
ple Beth El, last week became
the fifth Detroiter to become a
Chaplain in the American armed
forces.

Other Detroiters who were
previously commissioned and be-
came Chaplains are: Rabbis Al-
bert Gordon, Morton A. Bauman,
who is serving overseas, • and
Herbert Eskin, in the Army, and
Morton J. Cohen, in the Navy.
Caine Here Last Year
Rabbi Lymon, a graduate of
Hebrew \ Union College, Cincin-
nati, came to Detroit last year
from Ohio University, Athens, 0.,
where he was Bnai Brith coun-
selor. A member of the religious
committee of the Detrdit Army
and Navy Committee of the Jew-
ish Welfare Board, he is popu-
lar with servicemen at Selfridge
Field, where he conducted serv-
ices for several months.
Jewish Chaplains, now num-
bering nearly 200, 25 of them
in . the Navy, serve in all parts
of the world, including combat
areas. Fifty now on overseas
duty are serving in Australia,
New Guinea, India, China, Per-
sia, North Africa and Sicily.
The Committee on Army and
Navy Religious Activities (CAN
RA) of the Jewish Welfare
Board, composed of seven repre-
sentatives each of Rabbinical As-
sembly of America, Rabbinical
Council of America and Central--
Conference of American Rabbis,
the Conservative, Orthodox and
Reform rabbinical associations,
supervises the work of the Jew-
ish chaplains and its ecclesiasti-
cal endorsement is recognized
. by the War and Navy Depart-
ments.

On Vaad Hahatzalah

Tex., prominent rabbi and phy-
sician and one of the outstanding
leaders in Orthodox Judaism,
will be in Detroit next Tuesday
evening, to confer with local
leaders on the work of Vaad
Hahatzalah.

Bnai David Takes
Registrations for
School this Sunday

Registration for the Bnai David
Religious School will take place
this Sunday morning at the Syn-
agogue, Elmhurst and 14th Ayes.,
from 10:30 until 1 p. m.
The first session will be held
Sunday, Sept. 19, in the syna-
gogue auditorium, where a spe-
cial consecration service will be
held in honor of the beginning
students. The new students will
be given their first Jewish lesson
by Rabbi Joshua S. Sperka.
The Bnai David Religious
School is a project supported by
the Bnai David Sisterhood, under
the supervision of Rabbi Sperka
and Max Chomsky, educational
director of the congregation.
Classes will be held on the fol-
lowing Sunday mornings at Cen-
tral High School.

direction of Julius Chajes, music
director, has been rehearsing
during the summer months and

new compositions at the Holy

Eve, Chajes' own composition,
