The Third War Loan

The most important job facing every American today is
to provide the means with which to prosecute the war to a .
successful and speedy conclusion.
Next Thursday, September 9, the country at large will
commence its Third War Loan campaign. That day will
mark a challenge to every man and woman in the land to
become a recruit in the fight for liberty and to help over-
subscribe the fifteen billion dollar quota assigned in this
drive.
The editorial appeals by Nate S. Shapero and Lawrence
J. Michelson, chairman of the retailers' division of the Michi-
gan War Bond Campaigns and co-chairman of the War Bond
advertising committee, respectively, adequately describe the
obligations that rest upon all of us.
The army of Gallants who will devote their efforts to
this drive during the entire month represent the front line
fighters on the home front.
More Gallants will mean more sales, and every one who
has time to spare must enlist at once for participation in this
important campaign.

An interesting story fits into the picture in connection
with the Third War Loan campaign.
The Belgian Information Center in New York reveals
that the underground La Libre Belgique, in its Liege edition,
publishes the translation of a leaflet entitled "Ich Klage an"
("I Accuse"), secretly circulated in Germany, which reads:

I am the voice of thousands of dead.
My cry reaches deep into the interior of the country.
Even the thunder of cannon
Cannot drown out my voice!

In the name of all my comrades in death:
For all the blood that Germany has spilled,
For all the tears that Germany has wept,
I accuse our direst enemy—Hitler!
I accuse him, of treason! I accuse him of murder!
Here's to liberty and justice! I accuse him of having lied!
I accuse him of deceit against an entire generation!
He who began his reign with blood,
Who created; torturer of our people, an inhuman hell,
Him, I accuse!

Talmudic Tales

Catching Up With the Spies

More than five years ago, students at Wayne University
had complained that German members of -the faculty used
pro-Nazi textbooks and spoke all-too-favorably of the Hitler
way of life in their classrooms. These students reported of
their impressions with fear in their hearts. We were not at
war with Germany then, and too many libertarians were too
eager to protect the pro-Nazis in the interest of free speech.
One of the professors against whom the complaints were
lodged now has been removed from the faculty, when his
wife was exposed by the FBI as a member of the Detroit spy
ring.
The professor, himself, a descendant of Count Helmuth
Karl Bernhard von Moltke, Bismarck's great field marshal,
has denied attempting to inspire his students with Nazi ideas.
But the impression of the students, themselves, count for at
least as much as his denial.
It is unfortunate that in the interests of free speech we
often act too late in exposing those who undermine freedom.
But at least the FBI is able to catch up with the culprits.

Polish-Jewish Relations

Although a very wealthy man,
Rabbi Tarphon was reported to
be not as charitable as his means
might permit.
One day Rabbi Akiba met him
and asked:
"Wouldst thou wish for me to
invest some money for thee in a
way that wouldst be very profit-
able?"
Rabbi Tarphon consented and
gave him a substantial sum in
gold to be so invested.
Rabbi Akiba took the gold and
distributed it judiciously among
the poor where it was most
needed.
Some time later Rabbi Tar-
phon met Rabbi Akiba and ask-
ed . him concerning the invest-
ment. Thereupon Akiba brought
him to a house of learning and
asked a little boy there to recite
the 112th Psalm for them.
Upon reaching the ninth verse,
"He hath scattered abroad, he
hath given to the needy; his
righteousness endureth forever."
Rabbi Akiba said: "Thy invest-
ment is with David, king of
Israel, who said, 'He who giveth
to the needy, his righteousness
endureth forever.' "
"But why hast thou done
this?" asked Tarphon. "Why
didn't thou not tell me this be-
fore? Could I not have dis-
tributed my own means without
assistance?"
"Nay," replied Akiba, "It is
more virtuous to cause another
give than for one himself to
give."
"Says the Talmud further on
the subject of charity:
"Those who work in the cause
of charity, who collect money
for the poor and distribute the
funds judiciously,. are even more
praiseworthy than the givers."
"When you give, give cheer-
fully. It is the cheerful giver who
receives the fulness of bless-
ings."
"He gives little who gives with
a frown. He gives much who
gives little with a smile."

Two reports cabled from London to the Jewish Tele-
graphic Agency provide additional proof that not all is well
in efforts that have been exerted to establish amicable rela-
tions between Jews and Poles in the Polish government-in-
exile.

selor, has been appointed by the

The sentence has been pronounced, and it is Death.

In the name of Germany, execute him! You are the execu-
tioners! Destroy him!

To many this will indeed be a revelation. That Germans
should now seek to avenge the wrongs caused them by a
person whom most of Germany had chosen to be their
fuehrer!

Substitute for every mention of the word "Germany" in
this quotation the term humanity, and the entire world will
have a perfect reason for conducting the fight upon Nazism.
The entire world, all humanity, has suffered at the hands
of the Nazis, nay, at the hands of Germany which tolerated
Nazism. Therefore, the culprits must be punished. Proper
punishment is possible only after a crushing defeat of the
Axis. Such a crushing defeat can only be attained if all of
us will share in the responsibilities of the war.
It is clear that the Third War Loan campaign must be
made an overwhelming success, if we are to attain Victory
on all fronts as soon as possible.
Therefore, all of us must use every ounce of energy we
possess to guarantee the success of the current War Bond
campaign.
Invest every dollar you can in War Bonds; This should
be your immediate answer to Nazism.

The other dispatch describes the attempts of anti-Semites
to secure more seats in the Polish Cabinet. A letter written
14 months ago to the late Gen. Sikorski, Polish Premier, who
died recently in an air crash, was published in Wiadomosie
Polskie, an organ close to General Sosnkowski, commander-
in-chief of the Polish armed forces. Its publication is assumed
to represent a concerted effort on the part of the Endeks to
increase their influence in Polish ranks.
Liberal Poles have taken a decisive stand against these
anti-Semitic manifestations and are trying to discover the
identity of the editor of Walka. It is to be hoped that they
will be successful in preventing the spread of Endek influ-
ence which is undermining the efforts to create good rela-
tionship between Poles and Jews.
