QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
Why did the newspapers suppress the
news about that Jewish cemetery in the
Catskills being desecrated by anti-Semi-
tic hooligans?
Emil Ludwig, the distinguished biog-
rapher, has been lecturing at the Army
School for Military Government at
Charlottesville, Va. .. . Ludwig urged a
strong United Nations army of occupa-
tion in Germany after the war . . .
"What I fear," he said, "is that the day
after the death of Hitler the Junker
generals will kowtow and say: 'Come,
let us be brothers again,' and that some
of you will say: 'Now, let us make peace
—they are good people • . . But they are
no better than the Hitlers . . . They only
have better manners."
Founder of the idea of the "Pledge
of Unity" designed to prevent racial
conflicts in this country is a Mrs. Henry
Jaffee of New York . . . In public life
Mrs. Jaffee is Jean Muir of the stage and
screen (no, she's not Jewish, though her
husband is, and she calls her baby son
a representative of racial unity).

Quotation of the Week

"From the Civil War came the A.P.A.; from the World War came

the Ku Klux Klan, and already there are rumblings of religious

hatred heard in this present war. You hear someone say that a cer-
tain race is not in the war effort, that their members are staying
home. That's a lie—they are serving faithfully and draft boards
make no distinctions. The American Legion can make this a war
from which will come a truly great Americanism, and not the hatred
of Americans for Americans."

—LAWRENCE QUIGLEY, Commandant of Chelsea, Mass.,
Soldiers' Home, in Address before convention of
Massachusetts Department of American Legion.

IMPERTINENT

Wonder, if the allegation is true that
Sumner Welles: urged that the Bermuda
conference ought not to be held because
he was convinced that the British and
Americans were only prepared to stage a
show — and a poor one at that — while
Cordell Hull said it didn't matter as long
as there was some appearance of dealing
with the problem about which Jews had
been shouting?
Why is it that the various Jewish or-
ganizations which have first-hand infor-
mation about Breckenridge Long and
Adolf Berle continue to hurt liberalism
and the Jews as well by concealing their
state of impatience and resentment?

Commentary

By PHILIP SLOMOVITZ

Rosh Hashanah is approaching, and
with it will come an avalanche of "greet-
ings" which will fill the columns of the
English-Jewish newspapers.
These "encomia" usually come "by re-
quest." Rosh Hashanah has become a
Roman Holiday for politicians who are
able, "by invitation," to present their
names before the Jewish public in the
thick holiday editions which are packed
with "congratulations" from non-Jewish
firms.
At the United Palestine Appeal confer-
ence in Philadelphia, in May, Dr. Abba
Hillel Silver took occasion to condemn
this practice. He referred to the holiday
messages to Jews from non-Jews as
"stale and tasteless." But we doubt
whether his excoriating criticism will
bring the necessary. results. Even our
Jewish news agencies have fallen for this
kind of tripe.

SOMETHING TO REMEMBER'
With the American Jewish Conference
opposing the British White Paper policy,
it is important to remember that this
document contains other restrictions in
addition to closing Palestine for Jewish
immigration . . . These restrictions give
the High Commissioner of Palestine gen
eral powers to prohibit transfers of land, - .
and provide for the setting up of an in-
dependent government which would in,.
volve the political subordination of the
Jewish National Home to an Arab ma-
jority . . . It is also worthwhile to re-
