Prime Minister Smuts' Party
Defeats Anti-Semitic
Pro-Nationalists

JOHANNESBURG, South
Africa, (JTA) — Seven Jewish
candidates running for Parlia-
ment 'on the United Party ticket
of Prime Minister Jan Christian
Smuts have been elected in the
landslide that snowed under the
pro - nationalist anti - Semitic
groups, it was announced here
this week.
Three Jews were elected in
Johannesburg, two in Capetown
and one in Durban. Six of the
victorious candidates are incum-
bents.
A world free from persecution
and a Jewish homeland in Pales-
tine will be the rewards of the
Jewish people for having helped
the United Nations to victory in
the war, Prime Minister Smuts
pledged this week in a message
to the annual conference of the
South African Zionist Federation.
Prime Minister Smuts stated
that "you have helped us to vic-
tory in the war; help us to gain
victory in the peace and your re-
_ ward will - be great: a world
freed of persecution and domin-
. ation, a world in which Jewry
will regain Zion."
Services were held for the
martyred Jews and for the late
Lord Josiah Wedgwood and
Major Victor Cazalet. Greetings
were received from Dr. Chaim
Weizmann, David Ben-Gurion,
Mrs. Rebecca Sieff and others.

The Zionist organizations of
Detroit will devote their first
cultural meetings of the year to
programs memorializing t w o
great friends—Lord • Wedgwood
and Major Victor Cazalet.
Lord Wedgewood, one of the
staunchest supporters of the
Zionist cause, died in London
several weeks ago. Major Cazalet
was killed in the air crash that
took the life of Gen. Sikorski,
Polish Premier.
The decision to arrange for
such meetings in tribute to the
two Philo-Semites was reached
by the Zionist Council of Detroit.
The Zionist Council also de-
cided to arrange for a public
meeting at which the delegates
to the American Jewish Confer-
ence whose names appeared on
the Zionist Community Slate will
be asked to submit reports on the
Conference.
