Tunisia was announced
Joseph C. Hyman, executive vice-
chairman of the American Jew-
ish Joint Distribution Committee.
This action supplements emerg-
ency assistance to Jews as well
as to the general population of
Tunisia by the Office of Foreign
Relief and Rehabilitation Opera-
tions, beginning a few days after
the Axis defeat.
Mr. Hyman points out that
American representatives of the
JDC have just completed a pre-
liminary survey of Jewish needs
in Tunisia. The first measure
taken following the survey was
the organization of a Central Re-
lief. Committee in Tunis, com-
posed by leading local Jewish
residents.
Among the acute problems the
new committee will face is the
situation of 1,800 evacuees • from
Bizerte, of whom 1,200 are being
temporarily housed in four school
buildings of the Jewish commun-
ity in. Tunis.

Palestine.
It is related by David Dainow
of Jerusalem in a column, "Jer-
usalem Diary," which appeared
in the Zionist Record. The story
follows:

-

There are many beards in Pal-
estine. This facial adornment is
highly respected, for the habit is
no doubt the result of hoary tra-
dition on which many books
could be—or probably have been
—written.
There is a certain professor at
the Hebrew University. A dis-
tinguished scholar and savant, he
wears a long beard which singles
him out even in Jerusalerri. In a
crowded bus the other day, a
fellow-Jew hung on • to the pro-
fessor's beard instead of to the
strap. which the 'bus co-operative
kindly supplies. The professor
"stood it" for a few moment,
but as the bus jerked when it
stopped and went off again at
various stopping-points, he said
to the offender in Hebrew, "Are
you finished with my beard?"
The man addressed looked some-
w h a t pained and surprised.
"Why?" he asked. Are you get-
ting off here?"

Balfour's Political Foe
Lord Balfour often found it
difficult to remember the iden-
tity of- recent acquaintances.
Early in his career, the noble-
man was beaten for Parliament
by the Westminster constituency,
but was immediately elected from
the London constituency. Shortly
afterwards he was walking with
a friend in the lobby of the
House of Commons, when a man
came up and said, "How do you
do, Mr. Balfour? I am glad to
see you. I trust you are in good
health,"
"Excellent," replied Balfour,
"and I am charmed to see you
looking so well. It is a real pleas -
ure to meet you again, as it al-
ways has been."
Balfour walked on. "Who was
that man?" he asked. "His face
is familiar, but I cannot remem
ber him."
"That," replied his companion,
"is the man who beat you for the
House of Commons in Westmin-
ster."

NEW YORK (JPS)—Absolv-
ing itself of responsibility for its
alleged inactivity, the Jewish La-
bor Committee has issued a
statement branding the Joint
Emergency Committee on Euro-
pean Jewish Affairs as a "do-
nothing" body, charging that
every vital issue presented to it
was ignored and never acted up-
on.
The Joint Emergency Commit-
tee comprises the American Jew-
ish Comniittee, American Jewish
Congress, Bnai Brith, Synagogue
Council, Agudath Israel and sev-
eral other organizations in addi-
tion to the Labor Committee.
The Joint Committee was es-
tablished in March as an emer-
gency measure to cope with the
increasing seriousness of the
Jewish position in Europe.
Saying that it did not wish to
be charged with a share in this
"do-nothing" policy, the Labor
Committee asserted that it had
presented demands for reforms
on several occasions without
avail.
Inactivity was charged in the
case of the Cremieux decree, the
situation that developed - after
the uprising of the Jews in War-
saw, news on the position of
Jewish refugees in Spain and
developments affecting the Jews
in the Balkans. "The Emergency
Committee did nothing" was the
refrain of the Labor Committee
statement.
