But to win the war speedily and to secure unconditional surrender of our enemies, we must provide the sinews of war. The Third War Loan provides us with the opportunity to make good our obligations to the United States and to humanity. This is our chance to say to the country at large: We are Americans all, and we are set to guarantee the survival of the sacred traditions which distinguish our great country from all the nations of the earth.. Each of us is obligated to make his investment . as large as possible. Such an investment spells security for all of us. Every dollar invested in War Bonds -Means added ammunition for the speedy end of the war, and it also assures the strengthening • of our inner defenses so that our children and our children's children may be safe from any future attacks from the tyrants who have threatened to destroy civilization. In the course of human events, now that each one of us is engaged in a struggle against inhumanity, it becomes necessary for every person who cherishes the ideal of Americanism to accept the challenge that is implied in the democratic cause. I am confident that all of us will respond to this challenge in the spirit of the founders of this Republic. - The war can be won only if we fight it at home as well as abroad. The Third War Loan provides a battlefield at home—and because it is a front line away from the dangers to which our sons are subjected throughout the world, our participation must be offered unstintingly. The more successful this War Bond drive, the closer will we brought to victory. On to Victory, therefore, by oversubscribing the Third War Loan! be . The Third War .Loan, starting Sept. 9, offers another opportunity for Americans 'to help their country in its greatest emergency . and to help them- selves at the same time. - Detroit and Wayne County's share of the . *Third War Loan is $256,000,000. Our Government is. aski ng you to buy at least one $100 Bond over and above your regular Bond purchases, *to put the equivalent of two weeks earnings into extra Bonds during this* drive. • Let's not be emotional about it . . . Inhuman fiends • battering helpless, harmless, feeble old men and women and innocent children into bloody pulp . . . Ruthless invading armies, Quislings, informers, concentration camps, civilians digging their own graves t firing squads. It is true we are in arms against that sort of thing over there, and shall, with the help of God, keep it froM happening over here. But you've' read all that before, and heard it, from eyewitnesses, over the radio. Let's be practical. We are. committed to a war, engaged in it, righteously, relentlessly. A war that can have only one outcome. Our army and navy and air force need the weapons and ammunition with which to fight, the food to sustain theni, clothing, medical supplies, transportation for themselVes and for all these things. They cost money. During this short period, we must raise the largest amount of money from individuals that - any drive has ever raised in the' history of the world. And we can do it, if you (meaning . all Americans) will do your share. You are not being forced -to give this money. Nobody is going to make you stand and deliver. Your dollars are your own, to spend, or hoard, or invest, as you see fit. Spending surplus money means skyrocketting prices, inflation, robs your dollar of its value. It has happened before. It can happen again. To prevent this—let's buy more War Bonds! • The Third War Loan is, as its name implies, a loan. On the very finest security—all the tangible, material wealth of the richest country in the world, America. An investment, at a rate of interest that will bring you four dollars for every , three you lend today . . . four dollars with which to buy and own and enjoy the better things of life, and the only kind . of life worth living . . . in the years of peace and plenty that will conclude the bitterest struggle in which mankind has ever been engaged. Maybe there is more to be bought elewhere. Where?
