"One now understands much
better the point of the prophets
of old. The difficulty of reconcil-
ing the doctrines of mercy, right-
eousness and love, with the ad-
monitions to exterminate some
of the enemies of Israel in those
days; the difficulty of under-
standing the command to com-
pletely destroy Amalek, root and
branch . . . These things now
have a very clear meaning.
"There is no doubt in my mind.
The realism of the situation, the
need for developing and main-
taining in a free world the ideals
of peace, justice and mercy,
means that for the once we must
be merciless, ruthless and un-
yielding in the extermination of
those forces which have pre-
vented the rest of us from build-
ing that free world."

WASHINGTON (JPS)—The joint statement which, ac-

will spell "the doom of the Zionist cause" and "smash the
hopes of those who dared look towards Palestine as the one
realistic approach to the solution of the homelessness of a
driven people," it was declared in a statement released here
by Emanuel Celler of New York.
Rep. Celler's statement follows the issuance of a report
