SYNAGOGUE DECORATIONS
Human figures are not permit-
ted in the decoration of syna-
gogues. It has become customary,
however, to depict on the Ark and
elsewhere a lion or an eagle, sug-
gesting the latter half of a rab-
binical injunction: "Be bold as the
leopard, fleet as the deer, light as
an eagle, and strong as the lion,
to do the will of thy Father who
is in Heaven."
