Pay Glowing Tributes
To Late Judge Keidan

Newspapers and leaders throughout- the state as- well
as Jewish leaders outside Michigan joined_in paying glowing
tribute to Judge Keidan.

Isidore Sobeloff, executive director_ of the Jewish
Welfare Federation of Detroit, now on leave with the
National War Fnd in New York, in a telegraiii. to The
Jewish News expressed his heartfelt sorrow over . the
death of the great jurist.

The Detroit Free Press editorially said
"The key to the character and career of Judge Harry B.
Keidan was fundamental morality: Deeply devout in the
faith of his fathers, he played his part in the life of Detroit
with serene high courage and understanding compassion of
the ancient prophets of Israel froin whom- he' drew his
guidance and inspiration ... .

His Parents From
Japanese Prison

Pfc. Sanford Jack Blau, son
of Mr. and Mrs. M. Martin Blau
of 2911 Monterey Ave., last
week communi-
cated with his
parents through 1:
the Imperial
Japanese Army
which is hold-
ing him as a
prisoner of war.
The post card
received bY his
parents reads as
follows:
"I am intern-
ed at HQ. Mili- PIC. Blau
itary Prison Camp Of Philippine
Island No. 3. My health is ex-
cellent. I am uninjured and
well Hope: you 'are- all well, and
don't worry. Give my love and
regards to everyone."
Pfc. Blau is . a graduate of
Central - High School. alsO
studied at Greenbriar Military
Institute, W. Virginia. He was a
member of the National Guard
for two years. Before the war
he made six trips around the
world. He enlisted for active
service 18 months before the
outbreak of the War..:

"He was more than a brilliant philosopher- in the: -I a w ,
he was more than a great humanitarian, more than : a com-
panion and friend of all who met him; he was One of the
builders of Detroit . . .
"And so it was that he became . among: us- a Detroit
institution—a figure who walked with God, Serene amidst
the turmoils of racial, religious and class conflicts. The
tragedy of Detroit in its present unhappiness over these
flaming bigotries has been that Judge Keidan, desperately
ill; could not play his usual role of amelioration. But in his
death let all Detroit take inspiration from his life."
The Detroit News editorial stated:
"Death has taken a great gentleman, a great judge and
a great citizen of Detroit . . .

"In an elective and therefore political judiciary, with
Pvt. Edward Joseph Cabot,
its various ambiguities and compromises, Harry Keidan was
one apart, a judge in the old and best tradition, one learned who was inducted in the Army
in the law, broad in his sympathies for mankind, unfailingly Dec. 28, 1942, was sent overseas
in May and is
just and profoundly wise."

Mr. and Mrs. Herman Franzblau
of 2249.-Oakman Blvd.; has been
transferred from Iowa. State_
Teachers a College to Santa Ana
Air BaSe, Calif., for his pre-
flight training. A graduate of
Central High, Aviation Cadet
Franzblau- attended-, University
of. Michigan ; before leaving for
service last -May.

He Was Utterly Unselfish

The Detroit Times editorially stated:
, "He was a great man because he was utterly unselfish.
He never tried consciously to add to his own stature but
gave tirelessly of his greatness to help his troubled fellows.
He could be a stern judge if the occasion demanded, but his
inclination always was to lean down : and lift the unfortunate
wav-erers who came before him . . . -
"We shall miss him. All of the men and women he has
helped will miss him sorely.
"All the thouSands who knew him inevitably, will miss
that big, bashful, .awkward figure—that great judge, that
great man."

Recalling his early friendship with the' Judge . as a Pdlice
