Jewish Youth's
LISTENING
Member of Shaarey Zedek Board
For many years a member of the board of Congrega-
tion Shaarey Zedek, Judge Keidan until the last war was
a member of the board of governors of the Jewish Wel-
fare Federation. He was keenly interested in the work of
the United Hebrew Schools, and was a member of the
executive boards of Hebrew Free Loan Association, Jew-
ish Community Center and Jewish Home for Aged.
He was an ardent Zionist, and was primarily inter-
ested in the OrthodOx branch of the movement. He was a
great admirer of Rabbi Meyer Berlin who was his guest
at an intimate meeting of local leaders when the latter
was in Detroit several months ago.
Representatives of Orthodox religious movements
throughout the world always found a ready response to
their appeals from Judge Keidan who followed in the foot-
steps of his father, the late Abba Keidan, as an outstand-
ing supporter of all traditional Jewish causes.
Known for his integrity and impartiality, Judge Kei-
dan was noted for his desire to see most cases arbitrated
out of court. He succeeded in accomplishing this aim in
most instances.
Started Career In 1912
He began his political career as an assistant prosecu-
tor in 1912. In 1920 he was appointed to the Recorder's
Court Bench by Gov. Albert E. Sleeper and was re-elected
by large pluralities at every election, to the Recorder's
Court and later to the Circuit Court, to which he was ap-
pointed on March 17, 1927, by the late Gov. Fred W. Green.
The late Senator James Souzens proposed Judge Kei-
dan's name for the U. S. District Court judgeship, but he
refused to accept the honor because another Jew, Judge
Charles C. Simons, already served in this district. Senator
Couzens then told him that he would not care if all the
judges on the Federal Bench were Jews, as long as he
could find men of Harry B. Keidan's integrity.
33rd Degree Mason
Three months ago, Judge Keidan was awarded an
honorary doctorate by Wayne University. In 1939, at Bos-
ton, he was one of seven Michigan men elevated to the
33rd degree of Free Masonry, at the 127th annual meet-
ing of the Northern Supreme Council, A. A. S. R.
He has been accorded many honors, and on his 60th
birthday was presented with an American Flag by a group
of friends.
Among Judge Keidan's numerous affiliations was
his membership of more than 40 years in the order of
Oddfellows.
Of interest also is the fact that in his youth he was
a member of the Michigan National Guard.
As a mark of tribute to the deceased, the Circuit
Courts of Wayne, Macomb and Oakland Counties closed
all day Tuesday and the Detroit Recorder's Court at
noon, Tuesday.
Survivors are his wife, the former Katherine Lev-
inson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. I. Levinson; a daughter,
Vivian Sara, 15, and a son, Fred, who will be Bar Mitz-
vah in the Fall; three brothers, Joseph N. and Hyman A.
of Detroit and Max, formerly of Detroit and now of Madi-
son, Wis.; and four sisters, Mrs. Golde Blumenthal, Mrs.
Abraham Caplan, Mrs. Samuel M. Levin and Mrs. Harry
Z. Brown, all of Detroit.

Arthur Murray, who is consid-
ered to be the world's foremost
authority on dancing, states:
"You'd be surprised to find out
that dancing has doubled in
popularity during the past year.
Not only because of its very ob-
vious social advantages but be-
cause of dancing's remarkable
ability to keep people fit!
"Defense social units know
that dancing is the best cure for
fatigue and over-tensed nerves
and for theSe reasons alone offer
dancing as their main attraction
at most of the recreational cen-
ters. Dancing in all forms, ball-
room, folk-dancing, etc., offers
real relaxation and fun.
"Civilians of all ages have
found that dancing helps them
keep mentally and physically
fit.

division.
Those solicited for membership
are urged to send their checks, at
a minimum of $3 per year which
includes subscription to the Con-
gress Weekly, to Mr. Kasle at
6728 Goldsmith Ave.
Appeal Issued
The appeal states:
"Mussolini's downfall forecasts
doom and destruction for Fasc-
ism.
"What does this good news
mean to you?
"Have you been indulging in
the wish-thought that with the
downfall of Fascism the Jewish
problem will be automatically
solved?
"On the contrary, it will re-
quire the utmost vigilance and
effective organization to save and
defend our people throughout the
world. Under the leadership of
Dr. Stephen S. Wise, the demo-
cratic masses of American Jewry
have fashioned an instrument for
such activity in the American
Jewish Congress and the World
Jewish Congress. •
"President Roosevelt has assur-
ed Dr. Stephen S. Wise that the
Intergovernment Committee will
be reconvened to plan the work
of rescuing the victims of Nazism.
Heroic Task Ahead
"Also, the American Jewish
Congress, at the coming American
Jewish Conference called for Aug.
29, will represent the strivings of
the Jewish people in its desire
for a courageous and positive pro-
gram that includes the restora-
tion of Jewish rights everywhere
and the establishment of the Jew-
ish national home in Palestine.
"We who want to participate in
the heroic task which lies before
us invite you to join us and
make your voice heard.
"Identify yourself with the
American Jewish Congress—NOW
—before the opening of the Am-
erican Jewish Conference."

MELBOURNE, Australia,
(JTA)—Anti-Jewish propagand-

blow when members of the Par-

Jews. The anti-Semites alleged
that Jews in that area "seek to
