Explains Character of New Synagogue
Of Arab States

Temple Israel has selected campaign committees and
captains, for the purpose of soliciting subscriptions to its
building fund, at an enthusiastic meeting of key members
of the Temple held at the Temple offices in the Boulevard
Bldg..
Morris Garvett and Ellis M. Thal, president and vice-

president respectively of Temple
Israel, addressed the campaign
workers. Mr. Thai was chosen
chairman of the building fund
drive.
Explains Objectives
Mr. Garvett said: "Obviously
it would be neither possible nor
in good taste to undertake con-
struction now. However, our rea-
sons for a building fund campaign
at this time are two-fold. First,
by raising our funds now during
war time, we will be prepared
to help peace time projects by
beginning building operations
shortly after Victory. Secondly,
since all moneys collected over
and. above the cost of the land
are being invested in U. S. Gov-
ernment War Bonds, our mem-
bers' dollars do double duty —
they support the war effort and
the government's anti-inflation-
ary savings policy at the same
time." . -
Mr. Thal stated that while it
was impossible to determine
actual building costs after Vic-
tory has been achieved, the ex-
ecutive board of the Temple had
set a goal of $350,000 for the
building fund. He added that the
campaign was stimulated by re-
quests from the membership that
action be taken now for the pur-
chase Of the site and the creation
of a-building trust fund, and that
the early indications clearly
demonstrated that the members
• were eager to support the build-
ing program generously.
Character of Building .
Outlining the character of the
proposed temple building, Rabbi
Leon Fram said:
"Our new Temple will be' a
structure of grace and dignity
and will enhanCe the beauty of
the entire Palmer- Park section.
Remember . we have over two
acres of land in our site which
nature has already • adorned with
numerous rnagnificant trees. Pic-
ture' a stately building in the
center- . of • this large area, sur-
rounded, by Well -planned land-
scaping - arid containing a large
auditorium of worship, a chapel,
school rooms, administrative of-
fices and the usual social facili-
ties. When this.. dream of our
Temple-to-be is realized, the_ en-
tire . Jewish community of Detroit
will . -share the • pride of .our
achieVement."
Pending the erection of the new
House of Worship, Temple Israel
will continue to hold its services
in the Detroit Institute of Arts
and . to conduct its Religious
School at the Hampton-- Public
School, 18460 Warrington Drive.

Dr. Freehof's "Small
Sanctuary" Listed
In Best 50 Books

The American Library Asso-
ciation has selected "The Small
Sanctuary," by Rev. Dr. Solo-
mon B. Freehof of Pittsburgh,
as one of the 50 best religious
books of the year, and one of
the three best Jewish books. Dr.
Freehof is the newly-elected
president of the Central Con-
ference of American Rabbis.
The Union of American He-
brew Congregations published
the book through its Commis-
sion on Jewish Education com-
posed of representatives of the
Union and the Central Confer-
ence of American Rabbis.
Dr. Freehof's book, subtitled
"Judaism in the Prayerbook,"
surveys in a popular style, yet
authoritatively, the development
of the Jewish Prayerbook, the
meaning of its prayers, the uni-
versality of its thoughts, and
its spiritual beauty. He points
out how the prayerbook bares
not only the soul of the Jew,
but his history also. A section
is devoted to showing how pray-
er has meaning for the modern
man.

Soldiers Religious Guide

NEW YORK, (JTA) — "Israel
in the Ranks," a guide.for Jewish
soldiers and sailors in the service;
already has gone to press, it was
announced this week by J. David
Delman, president of the Nation-
al Council of Young Israel, which
is pub _ lishing the book. "This
book," said Mr. Delman, "will
be the first real attempt to supply
servicemen with a guide on how
to conduct themselves as soldiers
in accordance with the Jewish
law.

GENEVA, (JTA)—Anticipating that many Jews will attempt
to flee from France to Italy, Nazi authorities have resumed round-
ing up Jews and have confined thousands in the Drancy concentra-
tion camp which is under the supervision of the notorious Gestapo
leader Heinrich Brunner, who was in charge of "de-Judaising"
Vienna.
A report from France this week emphasizes that "the Drancy
camp has become the center where almost all foreign Jews still liv-
ing in France are concentrated.."
The report states that .raids on Jewish . homes are now taking
place in Toulouse, Limoges, Perpignan, Aix-en-Provence, Arles, Be-
ziers and other towns. In Paris, the Gestapo has established a spe-
cial guard over the Jewish relief office. Any Jew approaching the
office is detained and sent off to the Drancy camp. It is predicted
that by the end of the month there will not be a single alien Jew
left in Paris.
The entire Jewish community of Bayonne, near the Spanish
frontier, has been deported to the neighborhood of the city of Pau
without explanation. In Clermont-Ferrand, Pierre Laval's home
town, all alien Jews were arrested and sent "to an unknown desti-
nation" while a number of French.Jews were sent-to Drancy.

Nazis Charge Slovakian Jews With Planning Revenge
ZURICH, (JTA)—Nazi newspapers in Slovakia, reaching here
this week, carry articles charging Slovakian Jews with holding "se-
cret meetings for the purpose of mapping out plans•to take revenge
in the future."
Admitting, indirectly, that the defeat of the Nazis in Slovakia is
expected, the Gardista, a Slovak newspaper, says that blacklists of
"Aryans" persecuting Jews are now being quietly compiled by Jew-
ish groups in Bratislava, Zilinia and Secovee for the "day of reck-
oning." The Grenzbote, official Nazi paper published in Bratislava,
complains that the non-Jewish population in Slovakia is becoming
more and more friendly towards the Jews.

DR. J. L. MAGNES

cuss the contemplated forma-
tion of a federation of Arab
States, it was disclosed here
by well informed circles.
The same sources also re-
vealed that Arab leaders had
been boasting that Dr. Mag-
nes' position was supported
by certain persons connected
with the American Hadassah
organization.
It was believed here that
Dr. Magnes would be invited
to attend an Arab conference
to discuss the Jewish prob-
lems arising from the pro-
posed formation of an Arab
Federation.

Revisionists Leave
Jewish Conference

NEW YORK (JTA)—The New
Zionist Organization (Revision-
itsts) this week announced that
it is withdrawing from the
American Jewish Conference. It
charged that "instead of aiming
to establish a vnited represen-
tation of American Jewry, the
Conference is intent upon form-
ing a new body to safeguard
the vested interests of all those
long-established agencies which
have so miserably failed to for-
mulated a program of activities
designed to alleviate Jewish
misery and to offer a solution
to the age-old Jewish problem."

Germans Using 14-Year-Old Children for Slave Labor
LONDON,. (JTA)—Allied circles this week received informa-
tion revealing that the Nazis are using 14-year-old Jewish children
for slave labor in Germany as well as in all Nazi-occupied terri-
tories.: The Jewish youths work under the same severe regulations
as Jewish adults, the information revealed.
